Jay Bramblett transfer portal?

Recommended Posts

He is graduating this year and wants to play closer to home. He is from Tuscaloosa, so he likely wants to play at Alabama (if they would have a spot for him) or somewhere else in the SEC.

ND knows about this and picked up a commitment from the #1 punter in the 2022 class yesterday.

#1 Punter, where did you see that? I saw at best #8. Did I miss something?

Forget the 247, Rivals, and ESPN rankings for the specialists. The real rankings for these guys are done by the specialist sites — like Chris Sailer Kicking. According to Sailer, McFerson is a 6-Star player, and that’s how we should look at him.

I guess they are hit or miss also though. ND has gotten top 5 Kickers on that list and punters before yet I see better kickers and punters all over the country each week. Our kickers can barely get the ball in the end zone and miss 35 yard field goals all the time. I rarely see our punters able to drop a punt inside the 5 and with enough hang time to let our punt coverage get down there in the time to down it. I see other teams do these things routinely who get walk ons. I just don't trust any of the specialist rankings either way.

Last - Reggie Ho was a walk on !!

I mean most punters in college can't consistently drop the ball inside the 5, that's an NFL-level skill.

On top of that it's just the strategy on special teams in regards to punt returns these days, to eliminate big play returns. In 2005, 13.5% of punts were fair caught, last season 34.7% of punts were fair caught and it's maintained a steady incline since 2005. Through week 9 of this season only 27.5% of punts were returned, others fair caught/kicked out of bounds. Basically teams would rather have a 40ish yard punt with no return than a 50 yard punt that may get returned for 15-20 yards.

Bramblett was also ranked the #1 punter IIRC by Sailer.

Rank wise, he did pretty good. Not great, but his 43ish average is low end of NFL starters comparatively.

I agree hit or miss, but I think it's better to have a #1 ranked guy, than not have one...
