2 New Coordinators

Recommended Posts

Clark Lea is already forcing us to find a new defensive coordinator.

I think it’s time to pull the plug on the Rees experiment and find ourselves a proven offensive coordinator.

I have nothing against Tommy personally, but Notre Dame is not a place where you get your first shot at the big leagues. I cannot believe the fanbase didn’t implode when the hire was first announced.

I know this might sound incredibly anti-Tommy, but how the hell can you blame Rees for taking a dream position?? Of course not, this is on ND and Tommy would be a fool to say no.

It’s very apparent that unless he retires soon, Kelly will be retained for years to come. It’s also incredibly apparent that something needs to be done to take the team from a Top 10 team to a Top 5 team. In chat I said that Rees vs Venables is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. It’s time to go get 2 new guns and try to stop getting our asss handed to us in huge games. ND isn’t the place you go to get your training wheels removed.

Rees was bad tonight, but there’s no reason to fire him.

Agree. The first time we had the ball, we went right down the field and had to settle for a FG.

Got an interception and then drive down again but missed a chippy FG

Clemson than hits a bomb and all the air went out of the team

I would say it was the drop on 4th down by Davis.

Over-reaction much.

Tommy called a decent-game. Venable’s players made him look genius. We didn’t block, catch, or make good reads.

Book left a few check downs out there that could have been solid yardage.

Bill Bellichick not gonna help you when your OLINE gets whipped on nearly every down.

Vehemently disagree, he was bad today. That's not why ND lost, but he got his azz handed to him by Venables.

ND has a ball control offense predicated on run pass mix. After three trips in Clemson territory produced a measly 3 points and ND fell behind by 21, it’s a KO. At this point ND lost it’s unpredictability with playing calling. I Don’t believe there was much Rees could have done at this point. If ND capitalizes this on some of those early scoring opportunities I believe the outcome would been closer to the line, but no way we would have won. Clemson had us schemed and was playing with a lot more intensity top to bottom.

What would you have done differently? And why do you think it would have worked?

We ran routes that conflicted zone coverage(better scheme/adjustment from game 1). Couldn't get separation from man coverage. Missed throws/reads. Couldn't run the ball.. Play calling doesn't have much to do with it unless your main complaint is predictability from a down and distance point of view.. Great programs don't spend too much time breaking tendencies late in the season.. You are who you are in December.

It comes down to Jimmy's and Joe's & we don't have enough of them.

If we picked up all of Clemson's pressure, ran the ball, and got open then Rees looks like a genius.

Our D packed it in late in the 2nd quarter.

I would've used more Screens, Slants, Crosses, anything shallow & intermediate just to get some easy completions.

& then they start jumping your slant routes.

The Clemson DBs were giving cushion so they could drive on short passes. The only thing that worked early is when we got their DB's prepared to bail out of their pedal, we broke off square in / out routes for easy completions.

When a DB is off 2-3 yards and in a pedal its a recipe for disaster trying to make a living off quick slants. IMO

That's when you hit them deep off a double move. However, it seemed like they were trying to force the ball downfield every pass play.

That's Brian Kelly's offense. Has been since 2012. I saw some good intermediate routes early on first quarter.

Tommy Rees is simply calling plays within the framework of what Brian Kelly wants to do. I feel like TR has influenced more of a run dominance than BK wants.

I don't think we have the manpower to sluggo a good team like Clemson.. could be me, but yes it's frustrating to watch team run 4 gos all game every game when we have talent to be running other route trees. I think we've come off of that a bit more this year which isn't saying much because it's still a huge part of our offense.

This was where the wheels fell off. After the pick, we had a really good looking drive. We needed a TD there. If you go up 10-0 and don’t dig a hole, it could have been quite a bit different, although Clemson would have still won.

All fair points. It will be interesting what next years offense will be like and how Rees calls plays. My prediction will be more of what we’ve seen in the past with “chunk plays.” The only problem is there is no Book running around playing backyard football. I’m predicting we are going to be a very boring offense that will struggle to run and pass next year.

Assuming you have Kevin Austin, Jordan Jefferson, lenzy, Mayer, watts, and any new freshman, along with Williams and Tyree, there is no excuse for this offense to not be explosive and better next year.

Who’s throwing them the ball? Who’s blocking? A lot of those guys may leave. Besides Mayer, O haven’t seen a whole lot of these guys to feel confident they are going to just “flip the switch” and be impact players.

Rees was not the reason we lost. Clemson was the better team and we were the better team in South Bend. If Rees lost the game, how did we hit them for 47 the 1st game. Damn good reason Lawrence will be the #1 pick along with a host of other players. He was the difference and time for the ND fanbase to give credit where credit is due. Venables is one of the highest paid assistant coaches in CFB and yesterday showed good reason as to why. They won, we lost, end of story. A&M is not very good based on the number of games I've seen them play this season, OSU had to come back in the 2nd half against a good Northwestern team but saw no reason why ND wouldn't beat them on a neutral field. We are a Top 5 team and hope the committee drops us no further than #4 and see how we stack up against the team I think is the best in CFB, Alabama. You come to ND to play the best and hope the kids get the chance.

Go IRISH!

The QB is kind of a big deal not to mention they’re losing at least 3, probably 4 of their starting OL. I think next yr’s OL will be solid, but they’re not going to be as good as this yr.

That’s all you need, a serviceable OL, if you have game breakers all over the field and a competent QB. Bama and Clemson aren’t running out o-lines every year that are littered with first round picks, but their skill players more than make up for it.

it seemed like they were trying to force the ball downfield every pass play.

And the replays w/the view behind the QB told that story. You HAVE to be able to make adjustments on the fly when what you want to do is being taken away, and I didn't see any of that till the 4th qtr.

There are so many things you can do - that we didn't even try - to give you a chance to succeed when you're losing the chess match (things you mentioned above.) When the other team starts to adjust for that, so do you, but we kept doing the same things over & over & over again expecting favorable results that time & time & time again weren't there.

One thing should be abundantly clear to Rees: Calling pass plays where Book is in the pocket will result in no production. He needs to constantly slide Book to places where (a) he can see downfield and (b) where Alabama never knows the boundaries where they can set their outside rush to contain him.
