Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris victim of a raging fire

Recommended Posts

Sad to read.

The spire atop the iconic Notre Dame cathedral collapsed amid a devastating fire at the Paris cathedral on Monday that has been burning for the past two hours.

Images and video showed flames and thick plumes of smoke billowing up and around the spire, which is surrounded by scaffolding. Amid the fire, the flaming spire leaned to one side and then collapsed onto the burning roof.

The fire rapidly spread and took over the iconic cathedral as onlookers scrambled to get a view of the destruction, even as soot and cinder fell onto them.

Firefighters atop cherry picker cranes sprayed water onto the church in an attempt to calm the flames, and the smell of smoke emanated through the air. The French Interior Ministry said 400 firefighters have been mobilized to deal with the blaze.

This is really sad. They were able to save the art and religious relics though and it's now being reported the two towers will be saved as well. But still, what a catastrophe. My father was just there in the fall and took photos of Notre Dame. It's weird seeing them now and has to be hard for him to see as well. He's an architect and an '73 ND grad with a strong affinity for historical structures such as this. He could give guided tours better than the tour guides--and according to my mother, he did when they were there just months ago. Sad to see it burn to the ground like this.

I'm sure the stone shell will stay intact but pretty much any old wood, the roof, framing, etc will be toast. At least I would imagine.

The wood is perhaps one of the most admired aspects. The buttresses were before their time.
