Want Kizer back?

Recommended Posts

Curious to hear what everyone thinks. I have seen a lot of people on this message board and FHL who would gladly help him pack his bags. To be honest, I have felt the same way since the Stanford game. I feel like he had opportunities to lead ND to victories (or at least tie the game) against Texas, Michigan St., Duke, Stanford, and Virginia Tech. For whatever reason, all of his fourth quarter magic from 2015 was absent this season. I think we all know his major faults - poor footwork, holds on to the ball too long, poor accuracy on intermediate throws, and makes the occasional bonehead decision under pressure. I know Kelly's record with first year starting quarterbacks is something absurd (21-4 I think) because he simplifies the offense and actually emphasizes running the ball. Despite knowing next to nothing about Wimbush (besides the fact that he was a Top 100 recruit and is faster than anyone on the UMass secondary), I am really excited to see him take over.

But the more I think about it, the more I want Kizer back. I think this year was a perfect example of how BK depended on Kizer too much. I also think that we don't consider the fact that the OL had three new starters (plus McGlinchy moving to LT, which was clearly a problem) and all new wide receivers, minus Hunter. Kizer got sacked 28 times this season (which ranks in the 90s nationally), although some of those can definitely be attributed to him holding on to the ball too long. But I think the problems along the OL, the inexperienced/inconsistent receiving corps, and lack of a consistent running game really hurt him this season. Not to mention losing one of the best (game-changing) receivers in recent memory, Will Fuller.

Next year, all 5 OL starters return (I actually hope Eichenberg or Kraemer starts over McGovern at RG) and every receiver but Hunter (but we get Alize back...hopefully). If BK (finally) hands the play calling duties over to Mike Sanford, I think we will see a more physical, run-first approach that could really help the passing game. Kizer is a consensus first round draft pick, or at the very least a second round draft pick. I don't think we should be kicking a kid with that kind of talent out the door.

By the way, I am not posting this to start a debate about his NFL future. I see a lot of people complain that he will be a bust and is nowhere near a first round pick. But every single NFL scout has him as a first or second round pick in this year's draft, and they get paid to do that for a living.

I'm really anxious to see what Wimbush can do, but I absolutely want him to return. I never thought it was a possibility but McShay said he'd benefit coming back to ND for another year to work on his decision making. I still think he'll go bc he's got the physical tools and will dominate at the combine. I do worry he'll end up on a circus team like SF or Cleveland that has no clue on how to develop QBs and his career will be over before it starts.

I agree with your assessment of Kizer but really disappointed he regressed throughout the season. I think he had plenty of time to throw this season and he was to blame for a lot of sacks.

I would like to see what Wimbush could do, I think he has more potential than Kizer in the college game. I would not mind if he came back and would not help him pack his bags. However I am neutral and could care less either way as I feel Wimbush might be better suited for the offence.

Plus the stats for Kelly with first year qbs is way better so I feel we'd have a better record anyways.

Without a doubt, I would love to see Kizer come back. It's not going to happen, but he could really be phenomenal next year. The guy still hasn't played football that long...He's definitely still learning. Hopefully the O-line comes back in tact!

Would love to have him back but I have no faith that he will develop and improve under this current coaching staff. His weaknesses are glaringly evident. I almost wish he wouldn't have had the amount of success he did last year. Did he work harder to improve this year or is there a lack of coaching to develop and improve the QB and their skills? He obviously regressed this year and I do not subscribe to this bs opinion that Fuller going is a major reason. Dude has no touch on intermediate passes and does not step up in the pocket. He seems to always move laterally and never set his feet. Dances in the pocket and is indecisive. The next time he doesn't stare down his primary receiver will be the first time. I actually feel the Oline play has spoiled him in their ability to protect him from being decisive and working through progressions. He will never be any better at ND than he is now. Go and pray that you go between 10 and 15

He will regress if Kelly is back. If I were him, I'd wait to see about the coaching situation. If Kelly is back, declare for the NFL immediately. He still might want to strike while the Iron is hot, but to go to a bad team with poor decision-making abilities doesn't bode well for a lucrative second contract.

Kizer is not ready and should come back only if Kelly is let go. I think a good situation for him would be Arizona where he could sit behind Carson for a year. Plus they love to throw the ball downfield and Carson is nearing his end.

Lots of teams need qbs and it is a weak class, regardless of his tape scouts will love his mobility, toughness and strong arm.

Yes I would love to have him back---Yes I think his play took a step back this season and think the draft stock that was soooo high earlier has fallen off dramatically---he should come back

No I don't think he will given the calamity that has become Kelly and this program....

Why come back to all this mud when the golden goose is luring you into the crystalline pond

Geez I don't want to come back next year for another season of this so how could he?----;)

aloha

I can't wait to see Wimbush, but if Kizer leaves we are dangerously thin at QB. We'd have Wimbush, Ian Book, and Avery Davis(many think he'll end up playing another position). It'd be hard to call many QB runs when you don't have a good back-up.

I just wish BK would use common sense. Simplify the offense, simplify the defense.

Do I want him back next year? Hell yes! He's by far, our best QB and arguably one of the best in the Country. Even WITH his deficiencies! Alas, he's probably the best QB in this NFL QB class and should go for his own sake (money). He will probably be the first QB taken.

Absolutely I want him to return. I think Wimbush will be great for us when his time comes, but right now Kizer is the best QB on the roster and when he's playing at his best, he's one of the best QB's in the country. Consistency in playing his best sorely needs to improve.

This has been BK's MO since he's gotten to ND. First year the qb is great. The next year they regress. He depends on them too much. Which is exactly why he would be a better NFL coach. Put it all on the QB's shoulders and let him go to work. It's how the college game is turning too. Flag football. Only problem is, not everyone is Jameis Winston and can lead his college team to a championship.

But to answer the question, yes I would take Kizer back. He could use another year and ND could use him back.

I want him to come back but I think he should go for just this reason. No QB has improved under Kelly, they all start well and get worse. I don't know what it is, but I conjecture that it has something to do with Kelly NEVER getting behind his QB entirely except when he needs to hide from blame. Every year he goes through spring without a clear choice at QB and then he is fickle in committing, and when one does emerge they are always looking over their should since Kelly is quick to bench someone who is not playing well.

Either way, for ND I would like to see him come back, but because I like him and he seems to have good character I would like to see him go somewhere else where he can develop. Ideally a team that can give him the Aaron Rodgers two year sit and watch treatment.

Kizer back with his experience in a season without frustrating losses could be something special. people would talk about Kizer as a top NFL draft pick for a reason.

preferably Kelly will be gone, but either way Kizer could put up outstanding numbers with receivers also having more experience.

Yes, but Kelly and Kizer doesn't work.

Was watching them when I was at the ND vs Navy game, and Kizer would walk away from Kelly when Kelly was talking. (Kelly wasn't screaming at him, just asking WTF on a bad decision). For whatever reason, Kelly can not work with QBs. If Kizer had done that when Lou Holtz was coach, Holtz would have kicked him to the bench and put in the water boy before putting Kizer back in on the field that day. I was pretty shocked at the attitude.

Have you heard about the election? The world is different now.

Yeah, saw Corey Robinson was elected student body president, good for him.

Oh, that election. Yeah, well, umm, hmmm.

I decided to take the year off from politics and ND football. Seemed to work out pretty well.
