Kelly says D Will Be Tweaked

Recommended Posts

Here's some things I'd like to see:

1. No more linemen dropping into coverage. Linemen have two duties (a) stop the run and (b) rush the passer. Keep it simple and work at being more explosive off the ball.

2. Simplify coverages. No more Tampa 2. James Onawalu dropping 30 yards down field from his OLB position doesn't fool anybody and is a tremendous waste of energy. Use zone and man coverages and don't be predictable when you choose coverages.

3. Simplify gap control. This goes along with canning all the tricky coverages. Linebackers need to have a simplified read: If it's run get in your gap and attack. If it's pass get in your zone, or if you're blitzing get in your blitz gap. Simplifying the coverages will help linebackers focus on reading pass/run faster and getting into their responsibility.

4. Secondary tackling. Work on making sure 10 yard gains don't become 60 yards. This means lots of live tackling and wrapping up instead of block tackling and body tackling.

Secondary needs to work on pass coverage fundamentals. I remember seeing nick Saban years ago as a DB coach teaching the secondary how to cover. It was so detailed with arm and body position. Then he had them do it over and over.

How about Lyght focusing on that all week?

They need to start by doing this to BVG's playbook...
