  1. BK did really well at ND by making them a consistent Top 10 team, but he reached his ceiling here. And it is his ceiling, not Notre Dame's. Freeman has proven that ND can get Top 5 recruiting classes, whereas BK rarely had Top 10. BK's classes were littered with "underrated" 3-stars. Sure, some panned out (JOK, Julian Love, etc.), but many, many more did nothing in their careers. Freeman has 23 commits in his first class - 1 five-star, 19 four-stars, and just 3 three-stars. Freeman is increasing the talent level on the roster. It's going to take him a while to get that to the level it needs to be to truly compete for titles. BK is a really good coach who did great things for Notre Dame. While the program culture is great, he did not leave Freeman an overly talented roster. Sure, there are All Americans like Mayer, Patterson, and Foskey. But just look at QB and WR. ND's offense is nowhere close to the elite teams, and that falls on BK (and some falls on Tommy for poor QB recruiting). As far as I know, no rational fan is calling for Freeman's head. He's a first time head coach, and it's at ND, no less. Holtz went 5-6 in his first year at ND after being a HC for decades (granted, the situation he walked into was a lot worse than what Freeman inherited). Kirby Smart, as a first time HC, went 8-5 in his first season at UGA - and UGA was a consistent 10-win team. Saban went 7-6 in his first season at Bama, after coaching at Michigan State, LSU, and in the NFL. He also lost to a Sun Belt team, Louisiana-Monroe. There will be a ton of growing pains this year with a first time head coach. He needs to get more talent on the roster, both through recruiting and through the transfer portal, which is largely going to be a University issue. I appreciate BK and what he did for ND, and I frequently defended him (just ask @jbrown_9999), but I can admit that he was never going to win a title at ND. He just did not recruit at the level required. Freeman can recruit at that level, and he's been doing so. The results won't be immediate - and maybe he will end up just not being a good football coach - but I'd rather take my chances at a title with Freeman than settle for 10 wins and blowout losses to truly elite teams under BK.

  2. There are bound to be some growing pains in the first year of a new tenure. That being said, I was content at this point with the result last night. I felt for most of the game we were a turnover or a pick away from an impressive upset. Playing in that environment with the talent they have...I'll take what we got last night. Was nice to not get embarrassed or blown out...there's that. That being said: - Rees HAS to do better or they need to bring in someone who can. - Defense was a pleasant surprise. Cam will have to improve big time. - I want a sh!t ton more of Estime. Asked for it last year, didn't get it. - Special teams looks to be a little tighter this season. I'm willing to give CMF the time he needs to get his sea legs under him. There's going to be bumps on the road this season for sure. Anyone willing to write him and htis team off at this point is a fool.

  3. OK, just re-watched the game. Really, this game was a lot better than I thought. That's not wearing my Irish colored glasses. Things, I saw... ND was leading an in control as of 500 mins in the third quarter. Stroud made some plays on the following drive. The defense was slowly getting to him. He just made the plays. Bracy was injured on the play before Golden called the double safety blitz. I think that would of been Bracy's man on that play. Be interesting if the press asks Golden on that play if he thought Bracy was still in. Either way, a STUPID CALL. They would most likely kicked a field goal and it would had been 10-10 with ND getting the ball back. The next drive Buchner made a nice throw and they moved the ball again. That Salerno play really killed everything. ND was still in control and moving. So for me, Rees didn't kill them up to that point. I think he called somewhat of a good game. After that, the defense started to tire. They still put some pressure on Stroud but again he made some running throws and their guys made some plays. That's when ND was in trouble. I get why Pyne didn't come in now. But, I still think he could been utilized more. I also think Rees need some different routes-slants under or go routes. They leave their safeties on an island and Michigan is going to toast them again. Also wished they used more counter or misdirection because their guys sell out on every play one way. Also, Correll is still weak and slow. Lugg got manhandled and the o-line looked confused many times.

  4. Hello All, First time poster, long time lurker. I want to give a big shout out to Big for his recruiting info and Faith for all his posts of information within the program. I have come here for years to get information and hear what other fans think, but lately it has been difficult to read. Many have seem to left and it has become very negative in regards to the program and Marcus Freeman. I by no means think Coach Freeman has done a good job so far, but what did you expect? At this time last year many were questioning him as a replacement for Clark Lea and the defense steadily improved, then he was hired as the Head Coach. He was a relatively inexperienced coordinator last year considering his coaching history. Now he is an inexperienced head coach, facts are facts. Coaching is an art, rarely do you step into a new job and experience no rough patches. I believe he was hired, because people felt he could take Notre Dame to the next level, let’s face it Kelly went as far as he could go. Considering what Kelly left over for Freeman, it makes more sense each day why he left (excluding all the money). This brings me to my post, I have read how much better the program is now than when Kelly started in 2010 I will agree that the “program” in general is much better (stability, prestige, day to day operations, etc), but when you look at the actual talent on he field I have to respectfully disagree. Kelly 2.0 has been great at winning on the field, but let’s not be naive lots of those games could have gone the other way. They have been great lately at winning close games and dominating at home. They made great in game adjustments and the team did all the little things. Kelly has coached for over 30 years and it took him falling flat on his face to change and become this. I would argue they were never dominant whatsoever. They grinded out games and won, especially the last few years. So all the sudden Coach Freeman takes over and now they are supposed to run people off the field? Literally the entire coaching staff has turned over. The coaches are still getting used to each other and the players. People forget Tommy Rees is young too and his security blanket John McNulty is not sitting next to him. They shouldn’t get a pass, but let’s have some perspective. Why did everyone think we are just going to start rolling teams? When Brian Kelly started we didn’t roll teams, we lost to Tulsa and started 1 and 3. They found something midway through the year and ended strong. Here is the talent that Kelly was left for his first year - Darrin Walls (sr), Michael Floyd (jr), Gary Gray (sr), Armando Allen (sr), Kyle Rudolph (jr), Robert Blanton (jr), Harrison Smith (sr), etc etc. Crist was the qb and although he underachieved he was highly regarded and a more promising prospect, than what we have now. When you go look at that team most of its best players were upperclassman and they had studs in the sophomore class (Chris Watt, Tyler Eifert, Cierre Wood, and Manti Teo). My point that team although not as deep as the team today based on the recruiting rankings, the high end talent was better and the playmakers are better. This team is the least talented team Notre Dame has had in years, the holes are unbelievable (which Kelly allowed to happen over the course of years). We have good college player, very few upperclassman are difference makers or destined for the nfl. Can you blame Freeman for not realizing this sooner and addressing this sure. But Freeman also has way more pressure now than Kelly ever had his first season. He is coaching tight and the team is playing tight, everyone needs to calm down and keep things in perspective. Freeman was hired to take Notre Dame to the next level, no one thought it would happen this year and if you did that is your own reality. Freeman might never be that guy, but 4 games into Kelly’s tenure everyone wanted to fire him too, with arguably a much better hand of cards he was playing with on the field.

  7. Most of the ranked teams are facing a semi-quality opponent this week; no Alabama v. Citadel matchups this week. * All times are CST (the best time zone) Thursday 7:00 - Utah State @ #19 BYU - ESPN - Next week's opponent in BYU and the only Thursday game worth watching. lol Friday 7:00 - San Diego State @ Boise State - FS1 - not sure how good Boise is this year, but not a bad game until the late night game is on 9:30 - #15 Washington @ UCLA - ESPN - Washington has played well, but they are facing a decent opponent on the road, upset alert? Morning Games 11:00 - #7 Kentucky @ #14 Ole Miss - ESPN - Top 15 matchup but the sad thing is, unless it is a blowout, neither team will probably move much in terms of rankings 11:00 - #18 Oklahoma @ TCU - ABC - TCU has had some good games, can they upset Oklahoma for the second week in a row? 11:00 - #4 Michigan @ Iowa - FOX - I dont think Iowa is any good, but Michigan didnt look all that great against Maryland either and it is an Away game for Michigan's SUPER weak schedule Afternoon Games 2:30 - #2 Alabama @ #20 Arkansas - CBS - Alabama playing a tough game on the road, but Arkansas had a let down game last week 2:30 - #9 Oklahoma State @ #16 Baylor - FOX - Should be a good game and may determine the Pac12 champ 2:30 - #22 Wake Forest @ #23 Florida State - ABC - FSU is on a roll, Wake Forest almost beat Clemson last week, should be a good game to watch. 3:00 - #17 Texas A&M @ Miss State - SECN - Hopefully Miss State can get the upset at home. Evening Games 6:00 - LSU @ Auburn - ESPN - Go Tigers, if LSU wins this game, they may not have the bad record everyone was thinking they would. 6:30 - #1 Georgia @ Missouri - SECN - #1 team on the road, maybe a game Georgia overlooks, otherwise, I think Georgia will steamroll them. 6:30 - #10 NC State @ #5 Clemson - ABC - Back to back big games for Clemson after a nail- biter with Wake Forest, could be a really good game. 6:30 - West Virginia @ Texas - FS1 - Which Texas team will come out today? 9:30 - Arizona State @ #6 USC - ESPN - Another decent test against a Power 5 opponent for our rivals. 10:00 - Stanford @ #13 Oregon - FS1 - Oregon may blow this game away, but if you are up this late, it could be a decent game to watch.

  8. I did my undergrad at Utah State and Just got my masters at ND. Seeing that my previous Alma Mater just played byu, I’m happy to give a breakdown to my fellow Domers of byu’s position groups. I’ll start with the offense: - QB - Jaren Hall. The kid is a first round NFL prospect, and as much as I hate to say it, he’s as good as advertised. He’s mobile, accurate, accurate on the run, and has a BIG arm. I’ve seen videos of him throwing a 70 yard ball coming out of high school. If he has time, he’ll pick us apart. The one flaw in his game is that his accuracy decreases substantially when he’s under duress. Getting a solid pass rush will be critical for the Irish to win. - OL - On paper, they should be one of the better units in the country, but they haven’t done as well this year as their fans hoped they would have. We’ll see if that continues. If they play the same way they did against Utah State, the Irish D-line should win this match up handily. - WR - Their top three guys (in order) are Puka Nakua, who has been injured all year. If he’s healthy, he’ll be their biggest weapon. After that Gunner Romney is their speed receiver, then Keanu Hill is a solid #3. They have some decent tight ends, but nothing like Michael Mayer. Overall this group is decent, but they’re no where near the talent as the what we saw against Ohio State. -RB - they have a good Thunder/Lightning combo with Brooks and David, but they’re only as good as their offensive line allows them to be. I expect them to run some trick plays on us, especially a reverse —> flee flicker play they tend to run once a game. However, if we can win the battle in the trenches. I don’t see byu scoring more than 17 points on us. As for their defense, the strength of their unit is their LB’s. Their D-line is big and are used to absorb blocks to let their LB’s make the plays. However, they’re not quite as big and strong as they were in years past. Ever since their stud NG Khyris Tonga graduated, they haven’t been anywhere near as imposing. They have very little pass rush. Their D-line will just try to bull rush the opposing team’s to get pressure. It works on some teams, but I don’t see it working on us. For their coverage, they like to drop 8 defenders a lot which causes impatient Qb’s to fit passes in tight windows. They essentially live by the “bend don’t break” philosophy. They don’t get beat deep much, but they do allow a lot of passes underneath, so expect Michael Mayer to have a big day. As for their special teams, their field goal kicker has become a head case. He’s missing a lot of easy kicks. It’s to the point where byu fans started booing him. Kind of sad really. If ND can win the battle in the trenches, get pressure on Hall, and be patient enough on offense to sustain long drives, we should win the game by 2-3 Touchdowns. Go Irish!

  9. I’d venture to guess we will be seeing more of this. It’s not what your grandfather expected at Notre Dame, it’s the future and what will draw kids in. Go to the Hammes website, order your very own NIL jersey (yes, they are offering them for sale) and support the kids who play for us.

Calling for firings at this juncture be it Freeman, Heistand or Rees need to take pause and join the rest of us in Real Land. No one is getting fired. There are bound to be plenty of growing pains in the next few years. I would hate to have to count on any of you wanting to bail on the plan three weeks in… adversity is a huge part of life. Learn to deal with it better…

  12. I like Tommy Rees. Tommy Rees should NOT be calling plays for Notre Dame Football. In all honesty, he should still be an intern here or an OC at a small time college. NOT Notre Dame for Pete's sake. We should have one of the best in the business.

  13. I think one thing that people forget when ND plays the elite teams is they usually are running into heavy boxes. The Clemson’s, Ohio St’s of the world have elite secondary talent so they prioritize stopping the run against ND. They can cover NDs receivers 1 on 1 without having safeties over the top in most cases. Which means the numbers aren’t in NDs favor to run efficiently. Yesterday you saw UNC running a lot of nickel I believe as the commentators mentioned so ND was able to gash them early and build confidence. Until ND has more talent at WR and QB to take advantage of the 1 on 1 opportunities it will always be tough sledding against the elite teams. The last time ND could do this consistently was with Kizer and Fuller in my opinion.

  14. Over the past two games we have scored 15.5 pts a game. I think we can double that output this week vs Cal. Drew is a poor mans version of Ian Book and Jack Coan. Drew also has similar limitations as Tommy Rees did himself. I think it will be easier for Tommy to call a decent game with a QB that is a lot like him, and who is similar to the guys he has had in the past. It won't always be pretty, but I think Pyne hits on some of the shots that Buchner missed. I also think Tyree gets more involved and can rip a big one. 31-17 win and cover for Notre Dame this week. How is that for some optimism?

  19. There is going to be 2 leagues. The pay for play league aka SEC and B1G and everyone else. Granted a few ranked teams got waxed by fcs yesterday but ND was having trouble selling tickets already. Brian Kelly knew he was in for a shit show this year and the coaches we have may be great recruiters but they’re not magicians. Here’s the truth. It is going to take $25M in NIL money to win a title. We aren’t even paying top flight money for our coaches. There needs to be a philosophy change for the entire program or we are doomed to irrelevance once again. I love the helmets and the story but it’s over unless there’s a major change.

  21. I've been reading this board to gauge expectations. I watched the ND-OSU game. I am realistic about the talent level on our team. First, we are a top 10 sort of G5 program and team, so I do not think the notion of a walkover with your offensive line blowing through to the second level and your backups marching up and down the field en route to a 55-3 sort of romp is realistic. Sure, we could fall apart and have it snowball on us like what happened to Oregon at Georgia, but we aren't some IAA school or some cellar IA team like UMass or New Mexico State. I think the notion that your starting defense shuts down our running game and holds us under 2 touchdowns is a very real possibility. I have a very hard time seeing us establishing any sort of running game at all. This is especially true without Rasheen Ali who is a special talent and will not play in the game. Our other backs are solid, but not NFL caliber like Ali. We will be forced to throw and while we certainly have some capable WRs, our QB is a journeyman we are essentially renting for his last year of eligibility. He has skill, but I think a sustained passing game will be fraught with risk, though it is likely to be our only option. We have the WR talent to get open and score, but I anticipate what constitutes "open" to be tight windows and our QB will likely make enough non-perfect throws to give you turnover chances. Defensively, our front 7 is stout and deep. We are very good at LB, but not as deep as we are at DL. The front 7 is where we will look most like a P5 program and separate ourselves from typical cupcake fodder. We are very good at pressuring the QB. You will be left with the impression that we have P5 level team speed on defense. We will struggle to cover your TE, but there is no shame in that. You will feast on our secondary. Most Marshall fans, if they were honest, will tell you they cannot remember the last time we had really reliable play in the secondary. We have guys with speed and ability in spurts, but overall our play has lacked consistency and our technique when the ball is in the air has been poor for years. I know you don't have great WRs but I anticipate you will have a good day through the air as we try to take away the run. I see this game being pretty low scoring at halftime as Marshall shows well on defense. We will struggle mightily to consistently move the ball and keep possession though, and I figure we will start to burn out in the second half and the game will end something along the lines of the spread - 35-14 Irish, give or take a TD either way.

  22. First off I want to say this is not a sky is falling post but wtf is going on with Rees's gameplanning and calling. How is Matt Solerno your answer to the Number 2 team in the country. Why didn't we see plays for Merriweather or Styles or any of our talented guys?! They aren't even a second thought for the gameplan! What a waste of a defensive performance and this is all on Rees. He wanted all the control and got it and punted 5 straight times. Osu is playing 0 coverage much of the game and you don't put a 6'5 straight athlete and baller in the game when they are doing that with 8 to 9 guys in the box and throw a few up to him?!?! As a 5 star wr why the hell would you want to come to nd and sit behind a matt salerno.

  23. After sleeping on it. This game went EXACTLY how I predicted to friends. ND played it’s game. They had a chance win. They just made three more big mistakes more than Ohio State. Not bad considering everyone had them being blown out. ND played as tough and as good as they could being outmanned and in a hostile environment. That said, ND is going to steamroll teams until Clemson. They have an identity and I think they are just scratching the top. The thing from here on out is ND is going to need to build lots of depth EVERYWHERE! They lose a lot on defense next year. And they need some receivers to step up. What I’m hoping since they know their defense is going to keep them in every game is let loose on offense. Let Buchner take chances. Let Merriwrather, Colzie and co. Learn on the fly. They can afford to do it because of that defense. They do that and you will see Buchner blossom. If you run that boring stale offense and Buchner will stay the same.

  24. I didn’t call anyone a loser. I think Rees in an unqualified Offensive Coordinator for Notre Dame. He’s a fledgling Kelly acolyte who put up 10 points tonight. I get it that beaten down ND fans are satisfied with that and moral victories where we beat the 17 point spread. I’m not. We have a tremendous amount of offensive line talent and tight ends. Any drive that ends in 3rd and 10 is the result of a shitty offensive coordinator.

  25. My thoughts; Tommy Rees is hot garbage.....his offense has been terrible since he took over the play calling....Freeman should fire him this week and let someone that isn't a complete chicken sh't call the plays moving forward. Rees calls the same frkn plays over and over, every D-coord in the country knows what he's going to call. So damn predictable. Feel sorry for those kids that were out there battling.....there are some really good young guys on the team. i think once freeman finds an offense, this team will be a contender.

  27. I stop worrying when the game ends. It's easy for me to rationalize positivity, because: I don't have any control over the outcome, and I have more fun that way. As my wife and friends can attest, I can get pretty pissy during a game. I can't seem to shake that "meatball fan' mentality entirely. However, once the game is over, the result slides off my back pretty quickly. Then, it's back to looking forward to the next chance to watch a win.

  28. Alot of you are going well we got beat on some long passes. I'd say I'll take my chances. Our man to man looked the best it had in years! Keep in mind coverage is like offensive line play, people only notice if its bad.. But we had a number of pass breakups yesterday and our pass rush is better without free access throws released in under two seconds. What do the best college football teams run? Man to Man or Matchup zone coverage! What happens to ND in big games? QB's hit 70 percent completion against a zone and their teams stay on the field FOREVER. I get that we don't won't them to score 50 easy points. But if we do what UNC defense did 10 yards off and a 6 man box your basically only competing in your own redzone to decide 3 points or 7 points UNC QB run cost us like 1 drive. But Freeman wants his DBs to play man and I like it.

  29. Agree. If ND can hold UNC to 17 points while scoring 33 and winning g convincingly, I think the perception can start to change. That Marshall game and first half of Cal really put a poker in the eye for people. People need to see that joy and excitement that he first brought.

His wife was on her first trip to Notre Dame too. She must have been overwhelmed seeing all the love ND nation was giving to her husband. All well deserved.

  33. If nothing else, I hope he's viewed as more of a passing threat, and even better, completes a couple downfield throws in the first series or two, that will open everything up.

  34. Ok. But if we aren’t doing one single thing right wouldn’t an offensive coordinator try to be creative. Not call sloooow read options with a guy who could be your fullback. Look at this way, that would be like Marshall this Saturday running out of the I-formation. They can’t do it. Nor would it work because they know they don’t have the personnel right now to do it. Rees and company are calling and playing that way. We are simply running an offense that won’t be successful and doing it time and time again. So no, the RPO os shyt right now and makes no sense in running it unless you have better designs. I’ll ask you because you seem astute to ND football and play-calling. When have you seen ND run a slant in the Kelly area? Screens…bubble slants…draws….counters…check downs(last year was the exception…throwing to the flats. I say this because those are easy throws and help get your qb going. I’m still seeing a lot of the old plays being run and it drives me crazy when I see someone like Marshall literally come in and run their gameplan to perfection against a better team.

  35. ND keeps thinking it can “do it differently “ and it’s becoming blatantly clear that’s simply not possible. Now, the 12 team Expansion helps, but it means ND will need to beat 3 top 12 teams to win a NC. We currently don’t have the horses to do that.
    4 points
  36. I know that sometimes things happen (it's why they play the games) but ND should not be in the position where they need three plays to go the other way to beat a Sun Belt conference team at home. I would like to know if Rees is tipping his play calls based on personnel and/or alignment and teams have enough tape now to figure that out. In any case, Freeman/Rees need to figure out what can be run successfully with the current personnel on offense and adjust accordingly.
    4 points
  37. Chris Tyree, by far Rees’ most potent weapon given that Buchner can’t throw the ball accurately down the field, got one touch in the first half and only 5 the entire game. This is a guy that can turn a 5 yard pass into 15. Is a threat to turn the corner on a sweep. Can take a kickoff all the way. He and Styles are by far the fastest and most potent weapons on the team. He should be getting 15 touches per game. Instead Rees is running Estime and Diggs (who is neither fast or powerful) up the middle in slow developing plays and throwing 5 -10 yard stop patterns to wide receivers that’s actually 35-40 yard throws. That being said, this is not a tough defensive football team. In crunch time Marshall’s skill position players were breaking tackled and fought harder. That’s where Freeman needs to focus, since that’s where he does have experience. I doubt he’ll do much on the offensive end scheme wise. He was a risky hire having never been a head coach and has no experience evaluating and taking over an offense. He could get on Hiestand to toughen up the O-line, but the O scheme is the same old slow developing run scheme, only now we have a rookie QB that can’t throw accurately downfield. They’ve got a BIG decision to make if Buchner is healthy. Run him 10-15 times a game to upen up the option game and roll him out for quick release passes, or stick with hoping he can be an accurate downfield threat and throw long 10 yard stop patterns. My guess is that nothing will change and we’ll still see a lot of empty backfields and rotating packages. It’s all Rees knows. I hope I’m wrong.

  39. I don't understand all the hate right now on the team or staff. All of us who have watched this program the last ten years have seen poor recruiting and/or development at wide receiver and QB. This was Buchner's first real start in a huge stadium against the fastest team in the B1G. People need to realize that Ohio State is probably the only northern team with the speed to run with Bama or Georgia. Also, this was the first start for this whole staff together. We were in this game into the 4th quarter and had a real chance. Our corners have to improve if we are to compete at the top levels and we desperately need a couple of receivers to breakthrough and give us big play threats. Also, I love our running back and we just need to block for them to get them running to their potential. We have a get right game now and a good run of opponents to get us ready for Clemson later in the year. We will be fine!

  40. I wanted to sleep on it and let emotions from the game settle before commenting. Overall I was pretty happy with what I seen except a couple fixable things. We need to remember we had a young QB getting his first real start on the road in one of the loudest stadiums against a top 5 opponent. 1. The line did not play well and in particular the interior not picking up guys. This can be fixed and have no doubt it will be. 2. The defense played much better and faster then I have seen in recent years. Our weakness is getting home on pass rush and corners that can cover. The entire Kelly era we could not get top tier corners so the coaches need to change that and recruit better. 3. I really love the two tight end sets and want to see more of that but take advantage of the mismatches more. Everyone in the stadium including the defense knew they would force feed Mayer. Have to get Styles catching the ball in space as he is the only receiver still available that showed flashes of being dynamic last year. 4. The run game has to improve and the ability to get a first down when 3rd and 4 or less. This will get better I am sure Overall, I was not happy with a loss but definitely feel good about what I seen as a whole. The offense gets hammered for being vanilla and not producing but we overlook what the young guys were facing on the road in a hostile enviornment. Missing on recruits is still showing whether its lack of top tier wide receivers or corners but can be coached to be better. This season I think we are a solid top 10 team but I was not expecting us to be top 5 at all. We need to watch the season and see these coaches and players both improve. These guys just need to get experience together and embrace the coaches recruiting like we have not seen in last several years and growing the program.

  41. We have to win one of these eventually…right? I’m only 29 but have watched pretty much every game since I was 12. I have never seen ND win this type of game. I’ve also never seen them be this competitive. let’s friging go!!

  42. It’s a little hard to understand the gameday crew when their mouths are stuffed with Ohio state wieners
