  2. This thread is some end of world bazaro type over reaction..... it's week 1 we have a new DC we have a new scheme only 1 DL starter (Hinish) returned to the same position. MTA moved outside only 1 LB starter (White) returned. only 1 DB that started game 1 last season is starting this season (Hamilton). Lewis didn't start to late season So.... only 3 returning full time starters at the same positions they played last year on this year's D who here forgot we gave up 20 first half points to FSU at home last year?.... So we did better in the first half this year than last... FSU was a top 20 P5 rushing team last year... ND's YPG was just a bit ahead. we had 5 sacks. Only two teams (P5 on P5) have more sacks/game, and they are UGA and VT... only 2 teams (P5 on P5) have more INTs/game than we do... So we're top 3 in the nation (P5 vs P5) in Sacks, INTs, and turnovers.... Yes the run D was bad... but.... Take a breath... give it some time

Excited about Shamrock Series Nationally ranked opponent smart, physical, balll control controlling line of scrimage like navy mertz is good smart and well coached team big 2 gap DT Smart Physical, typical badgers ND's in good shape health wise Not to much intel from Coan New chapter for Coan BIG LB's for the Badgers More OL rotation Carmondy Tosh rotating outwide Joe alt finding a role need to sustain drives offensively Prince Kollie is available Buchner in hamstring treatment, probable OL needs technique but also game experience transitioning on the Offensive line- rocco mentioned holding down the fort while we transition Tosh, Blake, Mike and Joe have bright future at tackle 3rd and short is ok, base dive play averages 6 yards likes the running game we have big play guys we need to make big plays and get off the field on defense Senior receivers are sent confidence preparation matters will see more flipped corners not sure on Coans extra year of eligibility Coach that has not won a National championship Talking to your coaches before players is important we can't mix messages Like to be on the same page What they hear after the game matters Controlling locker room narrative Joe alt could do some Tommy tremble jobs, need to recruit more trembles likes to play in NFL venues, selling point to players Prettly level headed coan. Kelly yelled at Coan, Jack handled it great JD needs a break. Kollie might help Pryor can really run, playing to those strength Stretch of games is tough, Need to stay healthy and grow as a team defense played with confidence, need to tacle better, focused on the fundamentals, much better against Purdue Need to force badgers off schedule new recruiting rules. 25+7 gains recruiting flexibily, not big on it for ND Christ is outstanding, togh physical etc.

  9. Just a thread to post routine injury updates throughout the season. Not trying to replace any specific weekly injury reports for ND and our opponent... Feel free to post and add if I miss anything. I'll try and update weekly, likely after BKs presser. If there is already a thread like this please merge, or if someone does a weakly, let me know and we can delete this. Paul Moala (1C at Rover) Injury - Tore his other Achilles tendon. Status - Out for the year Next up - Kiser and Pryor were 1A and 1B MIsc - BK acted emotional. Said it was a raw sad moment IIRC Blake Fisher (Starting LT) Injury - Knee Status - MRI Today Next up - Carmody #2 LT, or Baker #2 RT who also practiced at LT earlier MIsc - BK said he didn't think he severely injured his ACL or MCL (so perhaps just a strain) Shayne Simon (#2 WILL) Injury - Shoulder Status - MRI Today Next up - WILL was already thin with Marist LIufau out. If Simon's injury is significant, might see some reshuffling and guys like Kolie getting a look. The lack of LBs in the 2020 class may come back to bite us. MIsc - Hoping it's not to serious. With scheme changes though, I could see some chaos at LB for a portion of the season. Kevin Bauman (2B TE) Injury - leg fracture Status - surgery and plate, 6 weeks likely Next up - As long as Mayer is healthy, we're OK, but need someone to spell snaps at times. Takacs at 2A can do that. MIsc - This likely opens the door up a bit for one other. My bet is Mitchell Evans who some say has been a freak, and possible the next great ND TE after Mayer. Note - Jordan Botelho, CBo Flemister, and Logan Diggs have unknown situations, but most assume Covid related. BK was asked, didn't say much, but said we'd get an update later in the week (Tuesday or Wednesday).

  10. Disagree. To be an unforced error, it has to be an error. It wasn’t. It’s comedy or brutal honesty. Either way, there was nothing wrong with what he said.

  12. #12 ND (3-0) vs #18 Wisconsin (1-1) AKA The Coan Revenge Game Time - Noon on Fox Place - Soldier Field Line: WISC -5.5 O/U: 46.5 Team General -Played 2 games so far (1-1) -Close loss to Penn State (16-10) who just beat Auburn -Blow out of Eastern Michigan (34-7) -Was one of the harder hit Covid teams last year, and there record (3-3) showed it. Offense General -2020 was their lowest scoring AVG in 15 years (25.1 PPG) -Lot of staff changes in the offseason. New QB, RB, DL, and CB coaches -HC Chryst goes back to play calling as well as QB coach -Offensive line should be solid but was pretty meh last season. -Gave up 2 sacks vs PSU, and 3 total on the year so far (2 games) Offense Passing -Mertz sputtered after a hot start last year -So far in 2021 (2 games), 0 TDs and 2 INTs for Mertz -Top pass catchers returned -Class of 2017 Danny Davis leads WRs with 129 on 11 catches -TE Jake Fergeson leads TEs with 69 yards on 12 catches. Offense Rushing -Jonathan Taylor was gone... and Wiscy struggled last season.... -Class of 2019 RB and Clemson transfer, and one time ND recruit, Chez Mellusi has stepped in and taken the starting job. 144 on 20 carries (7.2) vs EMU, and 121 on 31 carries (3.9) vs PSU. -2 other RBs, Guerendo (8.7) and Berger (4.1) are capable in the rotation. Defense General -Led the B10 last season in total defense at a tick under 300 YPG. -DC Jim Leonhard flirted with the Packers (their DC position) in the offseason, but he opted to stay (or maybe didn't get the job). Regardless, he's good. -Returned 8 of 11 starters -Hank Poteat brought in to coach CBs. This group likely the needs the most improvement. -ILB Sanborn is very solid managing the middle, but also are very productive blitzing. Predictions ND 17 / Wiscy 13 Ugly game. Neither offense will look good. Coan is efficient, but not flashy vs his old team, and has just enough success vs Wiscy DBs to look better than Mertz. Buchner delivers a few times with his legs, and one deep ball Whoever wins the turnover battle, wins the game Foskey delivers with multiple sacks on Mertz, and Kyle gets a key INT BK goes purple at least twice The board has a hissy-fit when Melusi breaks 100 yards The board, after the win, forgets about our woes on D from the past 3 games, and turns their poo poo to Tommy for only scoring 17 PS - My alter ego keeps telling me Coan erupts for 300+ and 4 TDs, and the Irish roll 38-13 on the big stage.

  13. Even with the O-Line woes, we have a better and more diverse offense than Wisconsin. They will run it 35 times. I hate to be simplistic, but if we stop the run we win the game.

  14. 1. 13 points allowed. first game under 20 in the freeman era. You know i feel that under 20 is the magic number 2. Defensive signs worked well for communication, only one real mistake lining up that we could see. 3. Positive turnover margin. Won the turnover battle. Lost by 3 last game 4. Made a run inside longer then 10 yards, to close the game 5. Avery gave Mayer a break. The safety has to respect Davis or Mayer will get doubled.

  15. I see ND putting it all together this week, and then, when they do jump out to a good lead, they won’t be taking the foot off the gas. ND by more than 20 is my prediction.

  19. I’ll tell you one aspect of why the south end zone was half full, if that. The south end zone was a place where season tickets were passed down through middle class South Bend families from Rockne into the 2000’s. Then, Notre Dame demanded what was essentially a one time seat license to those families, which they couldn’t afford. So, the most loyal fans ND had were gone. They felt betrayed by ND and those empty seats are on Notre Dame.

  20. I have to disagree. What hurts the run game is that our oline sucks a**. Lol.
    3 points
  21. I don’t have 5 points, but this is unacceptable. The OL is garbage and can’t even win the LOS vs a f’n MAC team. Freeman is a terrible in game coach and is getting exposed. Unlike Van Gorder, he can recruit. Buchner should probably start, but I don’t like benching Coan bc it’s not his fault, Buchner just works better behind that abortion of an OL.

  22. The team actually did well. It’s one unit that is screwing us. With coan at qb and our skill position talent, we should be hanging 50 on folks. Can’t do that when we’re giving up a ton of sacks.

  23. Disclaimer: It's early. Coan is not a blue chipper. Coan was an 87 rated 3 star. Coan has weak spots in his game. Coan will likely have bad games ahead of him. And most importantly, I'm not saying Coan is the second coming. But.... taking time to recognize an elite road outing in opening week for our new QB...... I'll try to post his weekly ranks going forward as time permits to track his progress. One of only two QBs in the last 25 years to have 350+ yards, 4 TDs, and less than 10 incompletions, in a road opener (per several tweets) Broke road opener record for ND (held by Book per tweet) in a few stat categories. Last time a ND QB had stats like that vs a P5 team was Jimmy Clausen vs Stanford in 2009 Week one QB stats/ranks (national, all stats from ESPN and SR) Total Passing Yards (week 1 only) - ranked 5th among all QBs, 3rd among P5 QBs Passer Rating (week 0 and 1) - ranked 13th among all QBs, 6th among P5 QBs QBR (week 1) - ranked 26th among all, 11th among P5 QBs Completion % (week 0 and 1) - ranked 17th among all, 8th among P5 QBs AVG (week 0 and 1) - ranked 19th among all, 10th among P5 Note... the fact that Mayer's 2 drops and the hail mary INTs drag down the above stats, means he was even better than those ranks... Basic Game Stats Total Passing Yards: 366 TDs: 4 INTs: 1 (hail mary) Sacks: 4 Drops: 2 (Mayer both) Attempts-Completions/Completions %: 26-35 / 74.3% True Completion % (drops as catches): 80% AVG: 10.5 Passer Rating: 194.1 QBR: 76.9 Rushing attempts / Total Rushing Yards: 9 for -3

  24. Here is a long list of ND's radio affiliates. If there is no local station for you, you can always find one the out of market with a "listen live" option on their site, or can find them on tunein.com or one of the other radio streaming sites. Almost every week I turn down my TV volume (Comcast cable), and stream the radio broadcast. https://und.com/radioaffiliates/ Also, keep in mind, if you Comcast, there's a good chance you already have the Peacock app with your service (on your cable box already, or you can link your Comcast account with the Peacock app on FireTv, Apple TV, Roku, etc..

  25. For some reason, Kelly seems to want to go into a "prevent" offense and defense when up a couple of scores rather than continue to pour it on. This keeps the game "close" which then prevents players lower on the depth chart from getting as many snaps and increases the likelihood of starters getting injuries both of which can hurt the team going forward.

  26. I use to want to see him go to a big time public school to work out my hypothesis or an NFL team. Now I'm happy if he stays at Notre Dame and we'll never find out. My inclination is that Kirby Smart, Lincoln Riley, Jimbo Fisher or whoever you think is better than him would not have the same success in South Bend as Brian Kelly has had. IMO these coaches are going to make their hay on the backs of the 5* who flock to southern power houses moreso than even Ohio State. This does not mean, in it's entirety, that Brian Kelly is better than the aforementioned coaches if they couldn't succeed in SB, but you'd need some type of control for this experiment whether that be BK going to the NFL or coaching for another big time college program that offers scholarships to any D1 eligible athlete. I sincerely don't think the latter is going to happen. Definitely a great debate, but you'd have to ask yourself if you'd trade Brian Kelly for any of these guys right now and why you think they'd succeed moreso than Brian Kelly. There is so much parody among the not Nick Saban group you can probably group Dabo, Jimbo, Chip Kelly, Kirby Smart, Lincoln Riley in there with Brian Kelly as coaches who've gotten their programs to the cusp of a championship or won it in the last 10 years consistently and you could really make a case for all of them. Brian Kelly has done it with far less talent at the QB position, which he has no one but himself to blame for that.

  27. The media, or as I call them the "outrage machine", is just doing what they do... It's not journalism anymore, it's who can outrage the most and get clicks. Cancel BK, cancel the Leprechaun... next, they'll want to cancel the Shamrock because it's not inclusive of 4 leaf clovers. This is a nothingburger... I liked BK's response... "It's an old John McKay quote," Kelly told reporters in Tallahassee. "I was kidding. It was tongue-in-cheek. It wasn't funny? ... I was talking and making a joke about it. It was taken serious? Are you people crazy?" "It's a John McKay quote that he used after a game," Kelly said. "I was stealing one of his old quotes and being funny, because nobody likes to be funny anymore. If you want to take me to town on that, please do."

  28. 1.) Coan is slightly better than what we thought he was based off his career @ Wisconsin .. not the practice footage but a tall smart QB with good accuracy and average arm strength. 2.) Our OL is not very good (again). I want to watch the game again to see where the problem is but it looks like they couldn't run block and were getting handled on pass pro. Other good teams are going to see this and tee off on the fact we don't have a mobile QB and can't get a good run game going. 3.) Freeman's D got shredded. Trying to defend a mobile QB with a 3 man front is a bad idea; if we pinched the pocket with a 2x2 front and forced him to make uncomfortable throws from the pocket it would be been a 5 INT game. ALSO Freeman let FSU stuff it down our throat by leaving both guards uncovered and LBs 5 yards off the ball.. Can we steal Bob Diaco back from Purdue? UND clearly has good talent on D and I think they would benefit from a more vanilla scheme which allows them to use athleticism to react and make plays. 4.) We have good, better WRs but not great. 5.) Mayer has to come up with the catches. One to extend a drive with about 4 minutes left and the other to set up a game winner in regulation. 5b:) UND got hosed, absolutely hosed on those replays. There was no way they had irrefutable video evidence to overturn the call on the field.

  29. Jack can have a Kyle Trask type season if we protect him decently and open things up, let's get this thing rolling!

  31. If you ask me why I can't vote in the storm poll I created. I just believe Kryen Williams and Kyle Hamilton have what Charlie Weis used to call the "IT" factor. When the chips are down and their backs are against the wall I just think those two respond, Some one compared Kyren to Golden Tate, while I think both are very good, and Golden can run faster and jump higher, I'd put the heart of Kyren against anyone. Kyle is the 6'4 Georgia player, one of the best safeties i've seen who took the road less traveled. He like Manti, could have been 1 of 11 at a Football Focused school, but he chose to be a Notre Dame Captain. I refuse to think their will be a storm while these two players are at full strength, and honestly I'd rather be wrong then to think it will happen first.

  32. I am glad we are not alone in this. My friends and I were worried that people would just blow it off, but when announcers for multiple games voice their frustration (Jesse Palmer went on a rant during the big game in Week 2, multiple games this week), something needs to be looked at. I am not even that bothered by a penalty, but ejection is ridiculous. Targeting 1: 10 yard penalty Targeting 2: 15 yard penalty and ejection Targeting 2 would be classified as a malicious hit without regard for safety and/or the sportsmanship of the game.

  34. Rice, a 6'3" combo guard out of DeMatha High School in Maryland, has Notre Dame in his final 6, along with Va Tech, Louisville, Alabama, Maryland, and Georgetown. He is rated #48 in his class by ESPN. Check out everything you need to know about his game in this evaluation: Player Evaluation

  35. Well said. The exclusivity to Peacock is wrong on so many levels. You're alienating many decades / generations of fans. It's very short-sighted to make an extra buck.

  37. If you are underperforming then someone has to be accountable. I’m not saying to fire anyone 2 games in, but someone has to be held responsible, and then if the underperforming continues then those responsible can be in the discussion for being fired. so, who right now is the main person for being held accountable? For me it is and always has been BK. He makes the hiring decisions on the position coaches. The buck ultimately stops with him.

  39. As of now, tommy has to completely reinvent the offense to account for a poor OL. No way around it. Buchner was the first step in that as BK admitted. Slow forming run plays, draws, plays that rely on sustained blocks need to be ripped out of the playbook. need to get the ball out of the qbs hands fast, get to playmakers on the edge. bubble screens should be a staple at this point.

  40. I'm wore out bud. 1. 2 QBs are better then one, when the ultimate teammate in Coan. Hats off to Jack Coan 2. My what went wrong thread will feature the offensive line. 3. Defense looked better, not great but better. 4. This season is tracking like 2015. Points per game and points allowed are close. Does Coan+Buchner=Kizer? 5. Playmakers like Tyree, Austin etc are fun to have.

  42. This is not a typical MAC team that ND has faced in the past (Miami (OH), Bowling Green, Ball State, etc.). This is a very good and experienced team. As OKelleyIrish said, 21 starters returning (would have been 22 but for an injury to a starting LB during fall camp), including several all conference players. They played two QBs last week against Norfolk State and will likely do the same this week against ND. They have a solid rushing attack, which is concerning based on what ND looked like at FSU. ND will get the win, but I can see this being uncomfortable at the half or even through three quarters. That said, I think ND gets a 2TD+ win. The FSU game was probably a good wakeup call for Freeman and the defense. FSU has talent at RB and WR (more so than everyone thought leading up to the game). If ND simply tackles better and doesn't get too cute schematically (no more 3-4), the defense should perform much better. Toledo will get some yards on the ground and there will likely be some big plays (that's one of the downsides of having an aggressive defensive coordinator), but I think the defense will play much better overall. Hard to see Toledo scoring more than 3 TDs. On offense, I just hope that Coan continues to look as good as he did against FSU. Keep getting Mayer/Williams/Tyree the ball, but definitely want to keep seeing deep shots to Austin and Lenzy. Would like to see Keys and Styles get more involved (Keys had 5 snaps and Styles only 1 snap against FSU). I have to think the running game will be much better, even with Fisher out. FSU's DL could prove to be one of the best ND faces the entire year (probably behind Cincinnati at least). I like ND to win 38-20.

  43. Good post. I think Coan is much more willing to put it down field than Fromm. And I think he'll even have more confidence next time throwing to Austin and Wilkins.

  45. Shipley has zero pass blocking capabilities. That was his miss on that last sack. He's gonna be good, but the lack of backs that can block will be a problem for DJ. Don't really feel bad for them though!! GO IRISH!!!!!!!!

  47. I think he meant Freeman will be the next person on his staff to get a head coaching job (following Clark Lea). I don't think he meant specifically the next head coach at ND.

  49. This really is a middle finger to ND fans.....its a game with very little mass interest.....ND vs Toledo is not a game that generates enthusiasm....so the ONLY real interest is from us....lets fleece the ND faithful for a little extra , pretty damn lame,,,,i like listening to the radio broadcasts so screw em,,,,, aloha
