I know this was talked about a while back, but Swarbrick makes it sound today as though it is more a matter of when than if.
Interesting to say the least.

More evidence that ND cares more about $$$ than anything else. And that includes winning or the student-athlete.
College football continues to be totally offbase with its priorities.

Hell, TR sent the Great White Fleet to China. I see no problem here. This is just our "big stick," circa 2013. How many teams have the opportunity to play all over this big old world of ours? Nowhere but Notre Dame, baby.

I can see the opportunity for some cross-cultural academic studies down the road. I'm sure Chona had some higher learning facilities ND could research with.

Ireland is a great place to play a game, and china wouldnt be a terrible place to play a game bc everyone knows that if the chinese people like something, they go over the top with it. If ND football became a big hit there, merchandise revenue could be ridiculous...but obviously thats highly unlikey. World wide schedule would def help with recruiting, thats a big draw

We won't let you produce our clothes but we'll gladly take yo money! Seems odd. Note - I do not in any way, shape, or form disagree with ND's stance on Chinese labor.

to travel all over the world, and knowing that Notre Dame is not only the most popular college football team in the US, but also, in the world

I'd love if ND played in China as I live in Shanghai but it just does not make any sense to me. There is an ever growing expat population here but the Chinese have absolutely no interest in college football or the NFL.
Manchester United, a team revered across Asia, played in Shanghai last month and the attendance was 48,000 in an 80,000 seater stadium. I'd imagine the attendance would be much less if ND played Stanford at the Birdss Nest in Beijing. The Chinese will fund the missing revenue from the local government pockets but why move the game? I'm not a fan of this from a football perspective. |
