That is two home run hires in the past few days.

An intriguing hire for sure. Like Franco said in another post, "better late than never". With as much ill will as Kelly has amassed, I wonder if all of these home runs can salvage this regime. If not it is a huge overhaul next year.

He has a rep as a great recruiter and has been at ND before, great pickup.

Agree, awesome pickup. Kelly is seemingly making all the right moves so far to try to turn this thing around.

If all of these hirings/firings turnout to be true, it sure appears someone is telling Kelly who his staff will be next year.

I get the sense it was a "you or them" type discussion and, not unexpectedly, Kelly chose himself.

Polian I believe was the guy known for the Manti Teo recruitment. He also gives you instant credibility with kids with NFL aspirations, for those who are new Bill Polian is his dad. Bill was the GM of the Colts, Bills and others, an NFL hall of fame executive.

He's also been a head coach at Nevada recently.

Yep fighting for his job, Cory. This is a significant departure from the Kelly we know, so you can tell Swarbrick or someone else is generating a list.

Credit Notre Dame for "committing the financial resources" This would be another roughly million dollar hire, second in two days.

Special Teams coordinator again or OC? Seems like ST would be a giant step backwards.

Everything I've seen is special teams as well. Since Quinn went to tight ends you have to think Denbrock will be OC.

How were ST when Polian was here with Weis and BK. I honestly don't remember.

I do remember he was a greta recruiter though.

I don't have stats, and I didn't look anything up, but I really don't remember them being very good. I seem to remember people saying he was a great recruiter, but not as good of a coach?

Yep, he was the point man who got Manti Teo to commit to ND!

In 2008, the earliest I can easily get stats, ND was 60th in punt return.
In 2009, they were 19th.

At Stanford in 2010, they were 33rd.
In 2011 they were 23rd.

At Texas A&M in 2012, they were 15th.

Nevada went from 67th in 2013 to 22nd last year.

So he has pretty much had an above average punt return team every season.

His punt teams have been all over in terms of holding opponents on punt returns.

His kickoff return teams have all been pretty average as well.

I was holding out hope for John Goodman as ST coach. His fair catches were electric and game changing.

He would have been responsible for this as well:

So we just have to get a safety who can't be tackled and allowed a few blocks in the back and special teams should be all set.

I'm remembering the Weis contract is off the books and WE ARE ND with the money we are now spending

I see what you're saying but Urban Myer is the ST coach of the buckeyes.. It's just uncommon

Default You people have serious amnesia problems

Polian was the least popular staff member under Weis except for possibly the offensive line coach. Everybody thought Polian was horrendous. Many people theorized that his last name was the only reason Weis didn't fire him.

The special teams were good in Weis' 1st year but were beyond a horrendous joke his final 4 years. The special teams were probably even worse under Weis than they've been under BK.

I also will never forget watching the Stanford Ok State Fiesta Bowl game shortly after Polian was hired at Stanford. Stanford lost the game because they missed 3 or 4 FGs from less than 30 yards. That game showed that he was an awful special teams coach even when he's not under Weis.

Polian's recruiting prowess also won't matter very much if BK is only at ND one more year. Kelly wouldn't be at ND long enough to benefit from the recruits Polian would bring in.

Wow, you're fun. The special teams this season were 10x worse then anything seen under Weis. And Polian will still make a big time recruiting impact even if it's for only 1 season. The 18 class is not going to be easy to hold together with the scalding hot seat so it's going to take a great effort to get it to finish in the top 10 imo so they need all the help they can get even if it's just for that class.

You need to seriously go a google search on this site, NDNation or UHND for past results on Brian Polian. He was a horrible ST coach. Everybody wanted him fired after about 2006 or at the very latest 2007.

Yes he was a good recruiting coordinator. But considering how rarely freshman start this year's recruiting class actually is not that important for Kelly's job status. If anybody ends up benefiting from Polian's recruiting it would be BK's successor.

It's been 10 years since then. He could have improved a bit since then.

After his ND days he coached under Harbaugh and Shaw at Stanford. Their special teams were pretty good while he was there, but more importantly he likely learned some things from two good coaches. He also was liked at Texas A&M from what I have seen.
