Default Week 2 Hope Fors

Not to make some sort of line in the sand ultimatum, but USF is in the rear view mirror for me. It sucked, it was uncharacteristic of the brand of football I saw played last year, it surprised me to see so many veterans make rookie errors, but its over. Time to apply those things towards week 2 vs. Michigan. Here are my 5 big things I hope we see from the Michigan game:

1. Commit to the ground game - Even though he fumbled, we need Jonas to support Cierre's effort to help take the air out of the ball. If our defense is on the field for 35 minutes, that won't bode well for defending the fastest player on our schedule, who happens to be at quarterback. I'm willing to give a guy getting worked over by 3 defenders another chance to make meaningful carries. And, for what little it's worth, Michigan made some plays in coverage. In spite of Mike Martin, I still think we can attack this defense on the ground.

2. Tommy Rees - The horse is almost dead, but I'll hit it with a stick one last time. Last weekend had less to do with Dayne losing the job as it did Tommy winning it. Completing close to 70% of your throws with almost 300 yards in one half while playing down 3 scores is compelling stuff. There seems to be more pep in our offensive step when he's out there, and him trying to cover for TJ Jones on the sideline only confirmed last year's observations about his demeanor. I'm hoping to see #11 behind center.

3. Corners playing up - If we play closer to the line of scrimmage, Blanton is gonna jump a route at some point, whether it's pick 6 or blowing up a receiver. Maybe play off to begin with trying to bait a throw and gauging their speed, but the big cushions were a little too big last week. Denard's strength throwing the football lies in making short out throws consistently. I'll trust Harrison to cover the deep ball - lets try to make a play on defense and jump one.

4. Short leash for Turk - Its 110,000 at night. Starting a true frosh at his secondary position gives me the heebies and the jeebies. I don't want a young kicker hemming and hawing all week about punting in the big house. That said, I like the idea of giving him some punting time in practice this week. Turk is an up and down guy. I've never been a huge fan, but he's got more experience, which should serve us well in the Big House. I'd give him a couple punts to work with, and if the results aren't there, get him out of there and open up the competition in practice the following week. Can't hand Shoelaces a short field.

5. Keep your feet, Theo - Needs to do a better job of reading the ball in the air while negotiating advancing gunners. Did a lot of thinking out there last week, but reading it better in the first place should help him keep his feet under him, which in turn should make it easier to catch the ball. When he's not dropping balls one way or another, he's a dynamic threat. More burn from Toma may also benefit him in not trying to worry about doing too much out there.

Honorable Mention: Feed Tyler Eifert in the seam more. If he can command safety attention over the middle, that'll go quite a ways towards getting Floyd a 1-on-1 situation.

What do you hope for?

I hope for a decrease in the three 15yard penalties on defense. Two on Harrison and one by Ethan.

I hope Rees starts but doesn't simply attempt to drive down the field each possession with repeated 5 yard outs and hitches. If I'm Michigan I just blitz him consistently hoping that one of the 10 short passes per drive goes wrong and it's a turnover. There's really no reason not to if you're UM.

I'm always more nervous about an INT happening with Rees, but he's at least shown me more confidence than Crist has. Now we just need him to feel comfortable totally opening it up.

And sprinkle some Golson/Hendrix in for good measure.

Marked improvement in 3rd down efficiency.

Marked improvement from the offensive line in short yardage situations.

Marked improvement from Ben Turk or Kyle Brindza, whomever winds up punting.

Marked improvement in the attitude, and behavior, exhibited in the gameday thread . . .

Calves, great list. My only add would be...

6. What's up, Dog? - I am beginning to harbor thoughts that Shembo is not properly utilized at the Drop linebacker. He is clearly dynamic at the point of attack, but coverage in space looks like an exposed weakness. So, my hope for here is to either see better route redirection by Shembo at Drop, or get Spond some time at same.

After watching the USF game again, I also expect UM to play up on Theo and try to jam him at the line. When USF did it, they were very successful.

1. Pressure on the QB
2. Defense causes at least one turnover
3. Better play out of the LB's, especially the OLB's
4. Toma in the slot - why didn't he play?
5. 45+ yd punt
6. a kick-off in the endzone
7. Daniels stretching the field
8. Someone who doesn't have to dive on a fair catch of a punt

I saw the same thing too.
If they had a safety or backer over him, they eliminated him from the play at the line of scrimmage.

No turnovers. If ND wins the TO battle, the boys win by at least 2 touchdowns.
