Default By the Numbers: Game 1

Resources:

Favorite stat

4/4 in the redzone for 4 touchdowns
also +2 in turnover margin

Stat that has me mind blown:

65 plays-42 runs 23 passes average last year was over 73

Stat that needs improvement

60.2 Books completion percentage last night was 68 last season.

One that I really want to see is other people beside Book being the rushing and rushing attempt leader. Over the course of a season it will take a toll on him. We don't have battle tested Wimbush in reserve.

yup he was 2nd in rushing to Jones which is NOT where we want him. He was hit at least 17 times. 14 rushing attempts 3 sacks. Thats not counting all the passes he was hit on.

TOO MANY.. WAY TOO MANY. Agree 100%

I know we were all expecting more from the DL - Okwara and Kareem in particular, but ND had 11 TFL and 4 sacks. I don't know how that compares to last season, but I would think that'd be near the top.

According to CFB Stats if I'm reading the stat right we averaged 6.0 tackles per loss last year!!!

11 is one shy of DOUBLING THAT NUMBER!

tneun89 click that link and then compare that to 18

Technically speaking, ND had 920 tackles and only one loss so they averaged "920 tackles per loss"

The Irish did average 5.8 tackles FOR loss though.

Great find, Faith, you piqued my interest. I went through all the box scores from last season. The 11 TFL would have tied for the highest in 2018 (Syracuse) and the 4 sacks would have been the third highest (Syracuse, Stanford/Northwestern). Here is the breakdown:

Michigan: 7 TFL, 3 Sacks
Ball State: 7 TFL, 1 Sack
Vanderbilt: 4 TFL, 1 Sack
Wake Forest: 10 TFL, 3 Sacks
Stanford: 9 TFL, 5 Sacks (Tillery had 4)
Virginia Tech: 6 TFL, 2 Sacks
Pittsburgh: 3 TFL, 1 Sack
Navy: 3 TFL, 1 Sack
Northwestern: 6 TFL, 5 Sacks
Florida State: 5 TFL, 1 Sack
Syracuse: 11 TFL, 6 Sacks
USC: 2 TFL, 2 Sacks
Clemson: 5 TFL, 3 Sacks

that's awesome. In Spring The NBC commentators said that Clarke Lea adjusted the defense to stop funneling things to the middle and start chasing things to the sideline. You could tell its a bit risky but my guess is it will increase tackles for loss and possibly create turnovers.
