He was the 5th safety this year, but he should have been a ST guy at least and then competing for a safety spot in 2020. Safety depth in 2020 is THIN.

Remember being high on him when he committed. Wonder what happened with him.

Good luck to him but I canít help to wonder how these guys sometimes do not see beyond the short term timeline. With the thin depth next year and he should be able to earn a spot for the next two years with continued work. Itís not like 2020 recruiting is bringing any high rated guys at safety (at least currently).

However in hindsight I made a lot of dumb short term decisions during those years....so makes sense in a way.

Big mentioned in the recruiting thread that he wasn't fitting in for our current safety role and he doesn't want to be an LB. I can understand that. I actually thought he would eventually move to LB after getting here.

I heard a quote from Kelly earlier this summer (paraphrasing) in which he said that Allen had a lot of work to do to get better at his safety spot. (slim down) . Kelly also said that Allen was not going to move to linebacker. He didn't fit what they wanted at linebacker on this defense. So basically it was safety or bust.
It sounds like Allen did not buy into what they were asking him to do.

Houston Griffith might move to safety.

Pretty self explanatory then. At least, we know what we have to focus on going forward. I like the idea of Griffith at safety. Realize he was a true frosh last year, but I did not feel he impressed at cb. Would like to see what he could offer at safety.

I was really high on him as well, but I think Hamilton passed him on the depth chart and knew PT would be tight.

Yes agreed. I cannot remember the last time I've been this excited about a ND defensive back (K Hamilton), and I've been a a fan for a long time.

Can Hart was a good dB in high school. He might be a guy that could move over to provide some depth for next year.

he's a hard hitting in the box safety, I believe recruited in the BVG scheme where the strong safety might as well have been a 4th linebacker.

The Lea Elko defense is a coverage defense usually so Safeties look more like big corners than linebackers if that helps anyone.

Well said, and it sounds like Allen was not willing to change.

His body type and skillset limited his ability to "change". He'll do well in the right system. Wish him well.

Yeah he'd do well where the strong safety run fits and blitzes and the corners play tight man

Wasn't Griffith a S coming out of HS? Seem to think it talked about that his best position was S not CB where he was put out of necessity? Maybe I'm wrong.

BVG was let go during the middle of the 2016 season. Derrik Allen was part of the 2018 recruiting class so not sure this comment makes sense.

Rivals had him at safety, 247 at cb. Giving him a good look at safety may be beneficial for him and ND, at this point.

timing was wrong then, but physical traits are right, bigger hitter, not a great hip turn, downhill player. he'll get success when a team wants hin to use his best traits instead of coverage skills.

This I do agree with. Sounds as if he was sort of a tweener on the Irish roster. Either needed to bulk up into a LB or slim down to be a safety.
