Default 2015 Roster

If we already have a thread for this, forgive me and feel free to move it accordingly...

Accounting for the transfer in of Avery Sebastian and transfer out of Matt Hegarty, I now count 93 scholarship players. I've broken them out by remaining years of eligibility:

1 - Golson, C. Brown, Carlisle, Stanley, Martin, Hounshell*, Okwara, Rabasa, I. Williams, Day, Councell, Grace*, Schmidt, Farley, Shumate, Sebastian, J. Brown

2 - Folston, Fuller, Prosise, Robinson, Elmer, Harrell, Rochell, J. Jones, Smith, Turner, Baratti*, Redfield, Butler, Luke, Russell, Daly

3 - Zaire, Bryant, Hunter, Heuerman, Luatua, Smythe, Bivin, McGlinchey, McGovern, Montelus, Blankenship, Trumbetti, Cage, Hayes, Matuska, Hill, Onwualu, Randolph, Deeb, Martini, Morgan, Tranquill, Watkins

4 - Kizer, VanGorder, Wimbush, Adams, D. Williams, Brent, Holmes, Boykin, Guyton, Sanders, St. Brown, Weishar, A. Jones, Bars, Nelson, Byrne, Mustipher, Ruhland, Hoge, Bonner, J. Williams, Dew-Treadway, Wallace, Mokwuah, Taylor, Tiassum, Tillery, Barajas, Bilal, Coney, Fertitta, M. Williams, Coleman, Crawford, White, Newsome, Yoon

*Potential 6th year for medical harship

Which means we have 8 players currently in the count who will not be on the roster come August. My guess on who is not:

5th years not invited back - Carlisle, Rabasa, I. Williams, Grace, J. Brown, Hounshell, Councell
Transfer - numerous candidates, I'll go with Mark Harrell

Other possibilities I could come up with are Baratti to medical scholarship, but based on Kelly's press conference Monday, that sounds like its not happening, Van Gorder coming off scholarship, or another transfer.

Anything I've missed on here or any other thoughts?

I'd guess VanGorder off of scholarship is a virtual lock. I can't imagine they'd bring him back and turn away one of the 5th years you mentioned, any of which are more valuable than a 5th or 6th QB.

I would have issue with VanGorder being on scholly and forcing guys like Carlisle, Brown, and Williams not asked back.

How does this process play out? Can they wait until after the spring game to decide who not to have back for a 5th year?

I hate to say it, but I would not ask Grace back. Great kid, but I just can't see him be effective. Now, selfishly, if he played this spring and was the best player on the field on D, then heck yeah, bring him back.

We are in a good spot when we are trying to decide if we want to bring back Carlisle...

Default Roster limits

They have until the end of August to pare the roster down to 85 scholarship players.

Default VanGorder

Will VanGorder need a scholarship? His dad is an employee of ND and his children get a free ride.
Or does this not apply to athletes?

Chris Brown is a junior now.

Hard not to keep Farley when bringing in Avery Sebastion. Why bring someone in? We need safeties. Baratti is tough. Played early but has injury bug.

He's not a 5th year. Brown is guaranteed to stay and would be guaranteed regardless. He's starting

Van gorder Rabasa and J Brown are the 3 people who have no chance. now we're at 88. It really comes down to 3 more

Probably one or two underclassmen will transfer. I will go with Farley or Grace as being another not asked back.

I'd be shocked if Farley isn't asked back with our depth situation at safety. Farley can play when he's healthy and hit. I want him back. I have little doubt Jarrett Grace will ever remain healthy. Doubt he comes back, and if he does I'd be surprised if he remains 100% healthy. Honestly think Tevon Coney will be the future at mlb, but I hope he redshirts this year.

I strongly agree with this. Save Schmidt, there's no 5th year I'd want back more than Farley (and that includes Nick Martin and Golson).

To clarify an earlier debate, Chris Brown is currently a junior, both athletically and academically. Barring an injury in camp, Fall 2015 will be his 4th and final year of eligibility and academic senior year. So he isn't a candidate to not invite back.

Van Gorder will be interesting. I don't believe Kelly has revoked a scholarship without a disciplinary matter behind it. It obviously will have no effect on Montgomery's status, but does set a precedent I'd personally like to see the staff avoid at all cost.

Kelly has said multiple times that walk on scholarships are 1 year deals. He isn't revoking it, he just isn't renewing it.

Does this include Hegarty? If not, then it's 87 with two more spots available.

Van Gorder, Rabasa, J. Brown, Grace, Baratti, I. Willams (given depth and young promise, much like Hegarty)...

Tough guess at 5 & 6, to me.

I assume he's being optimistic with Grace and Baratti, and that something healthwise will kick in before August practice. Add in VanGorder returning to walk-on status, and we're pretty close.

I also think that we'll possibly see Golson transfer after spring practice if it appears that Zaire is not only splitting time, but maybe even the lead QB in that split. I think we'll wait to announce 5th years until after spring practice

I would assume Farley would be back too, he improved in coverage but still wasn't the greatest. He was one of if not the best tackler on our defense, he was very good in that rover type role Slaughter played in 2011.

I guess we'd never had numbers like this because I have no idea how we're gonna narrow this down unless we have some underclassmen or fifth year guys decide to transfer. There's a lot of good fifth year guys so Kelly will have some very tough decisions to make.

Another spot I hope opens is Golson decides to go elsewhere. I think this team is so much better with Zaire, I hate the dual qb role and think it messes with both qbs and the team. Let's run the three horesemen Zaire, Folston, Bryant and see how far they can take us. Another guy I think was underutilized was Carlisle, we can add him to that mix cause I'm sure one of the backs will miss some time with injury.

One other thing to add is we have time to trim this list as I'm sure the medical hardships will narrow it down for Kelly.

If Golson does leave and if Zaire goes down, we have a QB that has never taken a snap. With that in mind, do you think that Zaire will be running the ball?

I like Zaire but if ND gets behind by a couple of scores in the 4th quarter, I think Golson has a better chance to bring us back.

Are you sure who the starting QB will be?
