Heggie may have been the worst scholarship in the history of Notre Dame.

I know his bio said he played, but for the life of me I cannot recall a single snap.

His offer list had, I believe, one MAC school and a couple of preferred walk-on-type offers at other middling programs. I could never wrap my head around how he got on ND's radar.

I would have greatly preferred to take a flyer on a Chinese 100m hurdler who had never seen a football but you know could run, or a Maori rugby player with American football size and speed. With those sorts of reaches you can at least say it's the "lotto theory."

In short, it's still irritating lol.

There were worse scholarships given out. Heggie was given a scholarship since, at the time, ND desperately needed bodies at DE.

They had only recruited 1 DE in 2007, 1 in 2008, 1 in 2009, and only 1 other DE for 2010.

This problem went away when Kelly killed it recruiting the next year (2011) when he landed 6+ DEs including Lynch, Tuiit, Williams, Springman, etc.

As a result of the new DE talent in the 2011 class, Heggie moved over to the OL and he made it into the two deep by his senior year when he played in at least 3-4 games.

So, he was a big reach but he was a last minute recruit at a position of dire need for the 2010 class. He also put in the work to at least contribute by his senior year. I also believe that I remember hearing that he was liked by his teammates (i.e. a positive in the locker room)

To give Kelly (and Longo) some credit, he probably performed better than expected, given his rating by recruiting services.

I'm well aware of the scholarship numbers and I I refuse to believe there wasn't somebody better to offer a spot to. I just looked at his Rivals page. I was wrong. He had no other offers.

Worst. Scholarship. Ever.

Are you basing your statement "Worst. Scholarship. Ever." on his Rivals recruiting page or what he actually did on the field in college?

My point is that he made the two deep at Notre Dame and played in multiple games. There are many recruits who never did that.

If he was in the two-deep (I'll take your word for it), it says more about the sorry state of the ND roster at the time than it does Heggie's ability.

I'm sure there were worse players. I just cannot think of one that should have never been there in the first place more.

I take that back; I just looked at the 2005 recruiting class (Willingham's last).

Heggie was still waste of a scholarship; he was a terrible player. But, he used the system beautifully and graduated from Mendoza. Good on him.

I'm over this thread. I'd like to get back to some positivity.

You are right, that last class of Willingham's was a real winner.

Will also let this thread go after this. I did find this on the Ball State website (I had forgotten that he transferred to Ball State as a graduate transfer.

Previous College: Spent four seasons at Notre Dame before graduating in 2013 . . . played in four games as a senior . . . competed in two games as a sophomore and three games as a junior.

So Heggie saw action in three different years for a total of nine games at ND.

Are you watching him in a flag football game at a local park? He left Ball State in 2014 or 2015.
