Default Sudden defense

I remember during Manti's freshman season watching him shoot a gap and blow up a RB in the backfield, and thinking that I was seeing a different breed of defender than I was accustomed to at ND. I'd spent too many years watching our defenders chasing behind guys, rather than closing the gap explosively. There have been other recent examples, certainly Jaylon. I feel like we have more of those guys on defense right now than I can ever remember in the past. Our DE group (when healthy) is stacked with those guys, and probably their ability to get pressure enables our DBa to play tighter, and thus adds to this perception. Bilal and Hamilton certainly seem to possees this quality, and JO-K is the one that really leaps off the screen for me. Even in the interior line, Myron seems to have an unusual burst.

Am I seeing things? Or is this personnel group that different?

I agree Paddy. This is the fastest D we have had in 20 years. Bilial has always had the speed to shoot a gap, but looks like he is finally trusting his read and just playing. JO-K is a freak athlete who will be playing on Sundays. I like how our athleticism is on the rise, just not yet to an elite level across the board.

I agree. I think our offense is lagging much further behind then the defense. You have to be able to score in big games to win.
