Default OT: Mark Dantonio resigns at MSU

https://www.espn.com/college-footbal...michigan-state

Nicely timed, just 3 weeks after his $4+m retention bonus.

looks like 2 RBs and a SDE are committed but unsigned. I would expect that the others might be able to transfer as well who did sign and didnt enroll.

Of the 12 commits who signed and the 3 commits who didn't, exactly zero had ND offers. In fact, the only MSU recruit who ND was somewhat involved with was Darius Snow, who has already enrolled.

It'll be interesting to see if any current players transfer out. One player, Julian Barnett was a guy ND went after but didn't land. He is a CB and was #57 overall in the 2019 class (247 Composite) with offers from everyone (Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, etc.). Probably a pipe dream, but ND could sure use a CB like that on the roster, even if he wouldn't be eligible until 2021.

Lawsuit and violations being alleged, timing probably not coincidental.

Didn't think he was going to hang around too much longer anyway.

Bingo! He waited to take the money and then ran. Still, looks like this investigation will find he had some culpability.
MSU definitely has had some moral issues lately with its leadership.

Rumors allegedly have spread for awhile that he was planning on retiring this whole season, but waited until well after the whole coaching carousel finished up to try and steer the job to his DC, Mike Tressel (Jim's nephew).

Per the local Detroit papers, Free Press and News, Luke Fickell is the target though no news on $$. Tressel has been named interim coach but with the stain of all that's transpired in East Lansing, doubt anyone from his staff will continue, though speculation on my part. Since he didn't get to replace Meyer at OSU, could be a good hire with good Midwest recruiting connections.

That’s the buzz around the city. He’s done very well at UC, interested to see how he fares if he gets the Mich St job. He’s not necessarily an Xs and Os savant, but he’s a great motivator and solid recruiter.

True. Did Bo ever coach at tOSU? Itís like those two schools inbreed that hate for one another. I know Mattison and others have switched but those were assistants. I forgot about Bo.

Might be an Ohio guy but is not the head coach at Ohio St and Day does not seem to be on the hot seat.

Also, I imagine that Ohio St and Michigan St both share a dislike of Michigan.

He WAS the head coach as an interm coach of tOSU before being fired. He also played at Ohio State. Stranger things have happened and Michigan State is a step up from Cincinnati. Say Iíll be surprised for sure.

It would be like Brady Quinn coaching USC. Or something to that affect.

More like if Brady Quinn coached at Purdue. OSU’s rivalry with Mich St isn’t close to what it is with Michigan. Also, Dantonio was the DC at OSU under Tressell before taking the Cincy job.

Really smart move by him. Why put yourself in the middle of turmoil you didn't cause and may hurt your chances on the field.

Doesn't Ty have some connections to MSU? Don't think he's doing anything right now.

Oh man. Talk about a killer of a program. They be better off hiring Frank Solich or remove the tag on Tressel.

Off topic a bit, but oddly, in the Cincinnati Enquirer this past sunday, the article on Fickel considering MSU kept harping on "This isn't Notre Dame, this isn't Ohio State" with references like "all good catholics want to coach at ND". I know Weis really went hard at hiring Fickel way back when he was just a position coach at tOSU, but is there something out there that Fickel would also seriously consider ND or "lusts" after the ND job? Or is it just that it's Cincinnati, and two of their best coaches in recent memory went on to take over MSU and ND?
