Default ESPN FPI predicting 8-4 record

Quote:
16. NOTRE DAME - Projected final record: 8-4

The word: While the Irish welcome back multi-year starter and Heisman candidate Ian Book at quarterback after he threw for 3,034 passing yards and 34 scores last season, there are holes elsewhere that fill be addressed largely by inexperienced talent. Book finished second on the team with 546 rushing yards, which is notable since Tony Jones is gone along with reliable WR1 Chase Claypool and top tight end Cole Kmet. The coaching staff is confident many of Notre Dame's 2020 signees will contribute in a big way this fall. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is a player Clark Lea will lean on defensively after a couple notable departures in key spots.
Given Brian Kelly's recent stellar Top 20 recruiting and hiring of a proven top OC, how can anyone, including ESPN, predict a 8-4 record and a #16 finish? Does this seem unrealistic?

I think we’re underrated and I think that bodes well for ND if recent history is any indicator. Sure we lose some guys but look at the replacements:

Claypool< Austin- Based off everything I’ve heard.

Jones< Tyree- No contest.

Kmet< Mayer- Mayer might be our best freshman tight end ever.

Elliott/Gilman< Pryor/Hamilton/Griffith- So much more talent here.

I’m not mentioning Pride’s replacement because that competition is wide open and we have no clue who will start there. Anything less than 10 wins for this squad would be a massive failure.

Sure they lost some talent to to the NFL but look what they have coming back.

An offense that features an entire OL returning and a QB with two years of starting experience. The receivers have a lot of talent just not a lot of playing time add to that Austin, the Northwestern transfer, and a possible freshman. RB will be our weakest area where we might need Book and the freshman to help.

The D will also be strong especially the D line. Sure we lost the two ends but their replacements are good and might even end up with better stats. LB return except for one. DBís might have been the weak spot but after getting those two transfers I think we are going to surprise people with a good defensive backfield.

Anything less than 10 wins would be a huge disappointment.

I'm predicting a 6-2 record including a 16 team playoff.

8-4 would be a big disappointment but not unthinkable. (Clemson, Wisc, USC, then UL or Pitt)

9-3 seems probable (Clemson then take your pick of two from Wisc, UL, USC, and Pitt). Iíll take Wisc and USC.

Of course 10 or more would be great with no blowouts, even to Clemson, would be great.

When I look at the schedule, and ignore the potential changes due to Covid-19, I see 2 losses (Clemson and USC) and one tough game (Wisc) that I think ND should win but I wouldn't bet the house on it...

So, the IrishGuy FPI has ND going 10-2

Note: If the season is delayed, I could potentially see a scenario where Clemson has a lot of guys sitting out for the draft which could move that game into the "tough but winnable" category.

Note #2: The likelihood of the season being a full schedule, starting on time, and with the same "scheduled" opponents is very very low in my book....but I was wrong once before so we will see.

If Trevor Lawrence sits out, I think ND wins. I doubt very much that happens unless he suffers some kind of injury similar to Bosa.

I predict 14-0

Brian Kelly will out talent most teams on the schedule and then out coach any team with more talent (including the CFP). Having Clemson at home will be such an advantage that BK should win by 10+ points.

Cmon man. Claypool was just a second round pick, Austin had 5? catches in his career. Tyree and Mayer havenít even got on campus yet, and we know how little playtime talented, but young offensive players get in Kellyís offense. The secondary I may agree with you will be better, but the dline lost its 3 biggest play makers.

They should go 10-2 at the very worst, but to act like losing Claypool, kmet and Jones is just gonna be no big deal is ridiculous.

I agree on Claypool, but I read somewhere where the coaches said he was the best receiver on the team last year. We shall see.

It isn’t though... Notre Dame is a big time program and loses great players every year and we’ve been reloading for years. Kmet isn’t nearly the receiver Mayer is, and the cupboards are stocked there. Tyree was a five star, if you’ve been watching the college football playoffs then you’d know they matter.

We lost Smith, Floyd, Jonas and Blanton in 2011... went to the title next year.
We lost Mcglinchey, Nelson, ESB, Adams in 17... playoffs next year.
This crying about a couple of players is extreme. This is college, guys routinely step in and perform better than their predecessor.

Better question is what happens if the CA schools cannot participate in the fall? Thatís 2 massive holes on NDís schedule.

The unpredictable virus crap aside....

An 8 and 4 prediction is a freakin Insult

Sure its not "unthinkable" but given all the games weve won over the last 2 years...giving us an 8 win season is about as bad as is feasible to predict...espn can just suck it

aloha

Shouldn't those count as forfeit wins for ND?

I hate referencing the virus, but LA county is locked down until Aug 1st. It wouldnít shock me if the rest of the state followed suit. Thatís a big deal

The entire SEC is planning on going back to normal in the Fall, so no, itís not going to be a Trend Nationally. Pretty much just CA, NY, and IL are the only ones committed to being bunkered down indefinitely.

If ESPN had the rights to ND's home games instead of NBC, believe me they would have ND in the top 4 with a 10-1 record. That's why I have renamed them "BSPN"

And MLB ďplansĒ on returning July 4th. Only problem is the players havenít bought in to the plan. Two things hampering this: money and health safety. For college players who have been rightfully crying for compensation of some sort for decades - I personally donít see how players willingly go back to normal when professionals are reluctant to.

The logistics of organizing this, despite the fact that highly paid individuals spend every waking moment doing so, are overwhelming and plans change daily and hourly.

Tell ya what, if Notre Dame plays a game in September, 2020, I will make a donation to the food bank in your hometown.

9-3 is my prediction. However, the fascist state of California wonít allow SC and Stanford to play so I will say 8-2.

I don’t understand why people think Wisconsin is favored. They lost more than ND from last yr. Maybe bc it’s a road game, but it’s not at Camp Randall.

The MLB issue is centered around $. Follow Trevor Bauer on Twitter, heí airs our all of the behind the scenes details. Athletes are ready to get back, even in the NBA where theyíre at a much higher risk of infection.

I can understand limiting fan attendance, but with proper testing, thereís no reason we canít have sports being played.

Canít discount that our guys are students first and with educational institutions all on different pages, planning for September football is a crapshoot at best. But we shall see...

But then you have a guy like Blake Snell, a former Cy-Young winner saying he wonít play with being paid. That sounds to me like a looong ways off if they are bickering about money.
