Default Top QB Prospects for 2020 NFL Draft: Ian Book #8 Underclassman

The Athletic had an article discussing the Top QB prospects for the 2020 NFL Draft.

https://theathletic.com/1069518/2019...-conversation/

No surprise, Tua Tagovailoa (Bama), Justin Herbert (Oregon), and Jake Fromm (UGA) made up the Top 3. The author stated that Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) is the top QB prospect in all of college football, but the article was only about draft eligible QBs.

They listed the Top 20 Seniors and the Top 10 Underclassmen (although they only listed 9 QBs). Ian Book is ranked #8 among underclassmen. ND faces four QBs from these lists: Fromm (UGA - #3 overall/#2 Non-Sr.), K.J. Costello (Stan - #5 overall/#4 Non-Sr.), Shea Patterson (Mich - #5 Sr.), Bryce Perkins (UVA - #16 Sr.).

Top 20 Seniors:

1. Justin Herbert (Oregon)
2. Steven Montez (Colorado)
3. Nate Stanley (Iowa)
4. Joe Burrow (LSU)
5. Shea Patterson (Michigan)
6. James Morgan (FIU)
7. Brian Lewerke (Michigan State)
8. Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma)
9. Blake Barnett (South Florida)
10. Riley Neal (Vanderbilt)
11. Tommy Stevens (Mississippi State)
12. Jake Bentley (South Carolina)
13. Kelly Bryant (Mizzou)
14. Mason Fine (North Texas)
15. Tom Flacco (Towson)
16. Bryce Perkins (Virginia)
17. Case Cookus (Northern Arizona)
18. Jason Knipp (Northern Colorado)
19. Khalil Tate (Arizona)
20. Nathan O'Rourke (Ohio)

Top 10 (Draft Eligible) Underclassmen:

1. Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama)
2. Jake Fromm (Georgia)
3. Jordan Love (Utah State)
4. K.J. Costello (Stanford)
5. Jacob Eason (Washington)
6. Sam Ehlinger (Texas)
7. Kellen Mond (Texas A&M)

Yes, but that is not how he is listed by the article. They classify underclassmen as anyone with eligibility remaining after the 2019 season - Book has one more year of eligibility in 2020.

Kyler Murray is 5'11" and he'd have been high on the list.

If Book was better, he'd be higher.

I think that's partly true, but if he was bigger, he would also definitely be higher.

Compare Ian Book to K.J. Costello, for example. Costello is the #4 underclassmen and #5 QB prospect overall, according to this list.

Costello: 65.1%, 3540 yards, 8.6 yards per attempt, 29 TDs, 11 INTs

Book: 68.2%, 2628 yards, 8.4 yards per attempt, 19 TDs, 7 INTs

Their stats are very similar, yet Costello is thought of much more highly by NFL scouts. Why? Probably a lot to do with the fact that he is 6'5, 215 lbs.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that Book is a Top 5 or even Top 10 QB prospect. He has limitations due to his size and arm strength, which NFL teams covet. Kyler Murray is an exception to the rule because of his athleticism and arm strength (but we'll see how he does in the NFL). Book would undoubtedly be higher if he was 3 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier (he would also have better arm strength). He is accurate (which as we've seen with Deshone Kizer does not magically get better in the NFL) and really smart. He has poise and is tough (see those first-down runs against USC). The knocks on him are size and arm strength, which is why he is not a top prospect and probably a Day 3 pick at best.
