Do we really not have a better option at punt return?

Because, just like John Goodman, he (mostly) catches the ball. Infuriating to watch, though, when other teams have punt returners that move around and do stuff in addition to catching the ball.

And Lenzy. I am absolutely dumbfounded that Finke is taking reps away from Young and Lenzy.

Wasn't Lenzy injured? I thought he didn't travel to Georgia due to injury last week.

Guys he knows the system , and is a senior, and is savvy and is....crap. I love his story being a walk on, and was pretty effective for us, but we have better options, and guys that can truly effect a game with speed.

Yeah, I'm not buying that Joe Schmidt/Rudy Bulls**t either. Finke is ok as 4th or 5th WR, but it's time to get someone in the Punt Return game who is actually a threat to return punts.

I thought this was going to be a post about running routes 1 yard shy of a 1st down.

You notice those too I see. It drives me nuts watching receivers on 3rd and long run a route then sit there a yard or two shy of the marker.

Keys and/or Lenzy need to be on the field. We have to be able to strech a defense and keep teams somewhat honest. If Finke has to sit so be it.

Completely agree. Problem is Finke is a captain.

He can still be a leader in a reduced role. A real Captain leads no matter the circumstances.

Props to Kelly though, he spent at least 1 minute chewing him out after he did that and killed a drive.

I understand. But this is Brian Kelly. Remember Joe Schmidt?

I don't quite understand all the calls for "stretching the defense" with Keys and Lenzy? Book is a short/intermediate passer, not a proficient deep ball thrower, so what good will it do to have burners out there?

Finke, despite a lackluster performance against UVA, has been pretty reliable and deserves some credit. Not every game played is perfect.

Finke had an awful game against Georgia as well.

These feel good, walk-on stories are great, but Finke is a weak link. It is the coaches job to get the most talent on the field at once and teach them how to play together. I don’t care if Finke is a good locker room guy (captain). He should not be playing all the time for a team with this much talent.

The difference is those other guys can take a 5 yds slant and go 80 yards. Finke gets 10. He looks like he lost a step also. Maybe playing through an injury, but Finke doesnít look as quick as last year.

Virginia had one of the fastest guys in college football line up against Claypool and Finke - potential #1 CB. He makes everyone look slower.

Finke had a head fart with the punt catch. Another time he has a 30 yards catch down the field at key point in game. That's football and its up to the coaches to get the kids playing at their peak and maximize their performance by playing together.

Regardless of his ability to actually complete the long bomb, just the threat of it gives the defense something extra to guard against.

It also forces DB's to commit penalties out of desperation if they get beat. I remember several occasions when Will Fuller had his guy beat, and the DB knew he better interfere, or he was probably gonna get torched on a big play.

So even if the other team doesn't respect Book's ability to go deep, they won't just let a speed guy be out there wide open, and a 15 yard PI penalty is just as good a completion.
