Student suing Tennessee player for punch
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A student hit in the face by Tennessee defensive tackle Tony McDaniel during a pickup basketball game filed an $800,000 lawsuit against the football player.
McDaniel was charged with aggravated assault, a felony, after the incident last January. A video from the basketball court on campus showed McDaniel punching Edward Goodrich in the face and then walking away as Goodrich lay on the floor for several minutes.
McDaniel pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, misdemeanor assault, and was placed under supervised probation.
Goodrich filed the lawsuit in Knox County Circuit Court on Thursday, exactly one year after the incident.
Goodrich's attorneys described McDaniel's behavior as "outrageous in character and so extreme in degree that it is beyond the pale of decency and regarded as atrocious and utterly intolerable in a civilized society," according to the lawsuit obtained Friday by The Associated Press.
Goodrich had four bones in his face broken and doctors had to insert a metal plate to treat his injuries.
The university was not sued.
"It's not a UT thing. It's not a sports thing. It's a situation where a young student was assaulted," Goodrich's attorney Travis Venable told The Knoxville News Sentinel.
McDaniel was suspended for the first two games of last season. He was among five players who will be seniors next season to announce this month he will return and not enter the NFL draft early.
"Tony has been through a lot as has the young man who was struck. Tony has worked hard to keep his life on track," coach Phillip Fulmer told the newspaper.
"This day and age, lawsuits and those types of things are just a part of our society. It's something you have to deal with," Fulmer said WELL I DON'T THINK I AGREE, SJ ANY COMMENT.
