i want to get some thoughts on a playoff system in college football, aswell as share some of my thoughts.
ive gone back and forth and im not really sure what i think anymore.
i think a playoff system would be good, but i dont want to see it get to where whatever last team gets into the playoff system doesnt really deserve to win the national championship.
im not really that big on NFL football, but compare it to NFL football.. i dont think a team that goes 10-6 should be able to win a championship over a team that goes 14-2. i know the NFL season is longer so teams that have 4/5/6 losses can still be considered one of the top teams in the league.. but in college if a team has 3 losses i dont think that team should be able to compete for a championship.
IMO right now the collage football season is so important and even losing 1 game can mean a chance of not winning a national championship, but i also think that a great team can have a good game and still lose giving them 1 loss and they could go 11-1 and still be considered one of the best teams and deserve a shot at a national championship.
if you look at this years BCS standings the top 8 teams are all still very good teams, and you dont get a 3 loss team until Florida at 17.. so theres no chance of a 3 loss team competing against an undefeated team for the championship.
there are some teams that can lose 2 games and still be one of the top teams. taking out any bias for Notre Dame.. do you really think a 2 loss team deserves to play for a national championship against a team that goes the season undefeated? personally i dont think a 2 loss team should be in that type of playoff system. losing 2 games vs going undefeated can be a big difference in a short season like they have in college football.. and can mean if you lose 1 game early on its not that big of a deal because if there was a playoff system that team could still lose another game and be able to play for a championship. IMO that takes away some of the meaning of the regular season.
as a ND fan id love for them to be able to win a national championship every year wheather they have 2/3/or 4 losses.. but for the love of collage football i want to see only thee best teams playing for the national championship.

ive given this some thought and maybe there could be different systems and once the season is over they then can determine which system to use.
example.. as long as there are multiple(2 or more) undefeated teams then no team with 2 losses can become eligible for that playoff system.
if the #1 team has attleast 1 loss, then teams with 2 losses can become eligible, but teams with 3 losses can not become eliible.
basically no team with 2 or more losses than the #1 team can become eligible.
it would be nice to have a playoff system where the top 2 teams get 1st round byes, rewarding them for becoming the top 2 teams. in this case its top 6 teams, 1 & 2 byes, 3-6/4-5. 1 plays winner of 3/6, 2 plays winner of 4/5?
i would also like to see the BCS sytem of rankings improved. take out the voting poll where coaches can vote for schools based on something other than what goes on during the game on the field (ofcorse this can hurt ND since they recieve alot in voting. ND was tied for 10th on the BCS computer poll)
if only used was a BCS computer poll, that could calculate everything involved yes? wins/loses/strenght of schedule/ect. i dont like getting points in a poll that would come from points in a game or point differental, because that would give more computer points for the higher scoring teams and not for the better defensive teams. im not all sure how the computer polls work, so im not all sure on that and how it would work out.
ok i think ive rambled on enough for now :?
thoughts?

I'm pro-playoff and would like to see the 6-team system you described. However, money concerns will probably restrict us from that. Sad.

Not a ramble at all. You put together some good thoughts. I tend to bounce back and forth between playoffs and present set up. The coaches at the AFCA convention voted to continue with the BCS, so it seems it will be around for a bit longer. I don't like the tieing conferences to a set bowl but then I have no idea of how not to do so.

THOUGHT just occurred to me, leave the conf. tie ins as.is : however, the top four teams regardless of conference or status shall be selected to the play off bowls ,and receive more monies, then team 1 and team 4 play, team 2vs 3 play, then the winners play for national championship. all other teams that win conf or are rated in the top 15 shall go to the various bowls for less monies than the top 4 teams , this would eliminate the teams that are just about with the same record, like Oregon, this year. there would be more incentive to get into the PLAY OFF BOWLS, as all 4 TEAMS WOULD RECIEVE THE SAME MONIES, THE SECOND TIER BOWLS THEN COULD SELECT TEAM 5 THROUGH TEAM 15 ,FOR ITS XYZ BOWL, THIS SHOULD MAKE ALL THE SCHOOL PRESIDENTS HAPPY AND INSURE A TRUE NATIONAL CHAMPION. THIS YEAR WE HAD TWO UNDEFEATED TEAMS, WHAT HAPPENS IF WE HAD SAY 3 OR 4 UNDEAFETED TEAMS, THIS WOULD FIT INTO THE PLAYOFF BOWL PICTURE, THE PLAYOFF BOWL SITES WOULD BE THE ROSE, COTTON.ORANGE,THEN NEXT YEAR COULD BE SUGAR, BLAH BLAH, THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SHOULD BE ROTATED EACH YEAR., AS IT IS NOW THE BCS IS HERE FOR A SHORT WHILE YET., JUST LOOK FLA STATE PLAYED PENN STATE, BECAUSE THEY ONE THEIR LEAGE TITLE WITH A SORRY WON/LOSS RECORD, TEAM 5 THROUGH 15 SHOULD ELIMINATE MOST OF THE TEAMS THAT HAVE NEAR LOOSING RECORDS?? YOUR COMMENTS?? maybe THE NCAA , COULD GO OUT FOR BIDS LIKE THEY DO FOR THE BASKETBALL MARCH MADNESS HAVE HOST SITES THEN, WE WOULD KNOW WHERE THE TOP THREE GAMES ARE GOING TO BE PLAYED BEFORE HAND , SOMEBODY COULD COME UP WITH A BIDDING DEAL LIKE THE OLYMPICS, LOTS OF IDEARS MAYBE WE CAN GET A BETTER SYSTEM THAN THE FLA STATE TEAM THAT WENT TO THE BOWL GAME , GOOD GAME BUT THE POINT IS THAT THEY HAD A VERY POOR SEASON, BUT PLAYED BECAUSE OF CONF. TIE INS. :?:
