McCoy wins national honor

By Brandon Chatmon
Staff Writer

Southeast High School senior Gerald McCoy has added another honor to his growing list of accolades. He's been named USA Today's national defensive player of the year. McCoy was featured in Wednesday's editions.
"It's exciting to see somebody recognize my hard work," said McCoy, who said his choice of colleges will come down to OU, USC, Notre Dame, LSU, Virginia Tech or Miami.

McCoy is a 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive end. He finished his senior season with 80 tackles (28 solo), 18 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, two safeties and a touchdown.

Charlie Weis, Larry Coker, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Frank Beamer and Les Miles all have set foot inside the McCoy home.

"It's crazy," McCoy said of hosting the who's who of college football. "As a kid, you see these guys. You're like, man, that's so and so, they've been here, they've coached this player and that player. Now they're in my house trying to get me, too. That's cool."

With people pulling you this way and that way, it's hard to sit back and wade through everything that's being thrown at you, McCoy said.

"My mother and father help me, I get support from everybody," he said. "One thing that will surprise people is that the coaches help me. And I have to give credit to my boy (former OU standout and current Chicago Bear) Tommie Harris. I call him and he'll tell me things."

McCoy said he'll most likely announce his decision on Feb. 1, national signing day.

McCoy Narrows His List to Four Schools

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The talk of the West team in San Antonio has been the play of the defensive line and no player has stood out more than Oklahoma City (Okla.) Southeast defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Gerald McCoy has been one of the best players in San Antonio this week.
The 6-foot-4, 305 pound McCoy is the No. 2 ranked defensive tackle in the nation and he's been lined up all week next to the nation's top ranked defensive tackle Al Woods.

McCoy said that nobody has been able to beat him in any of the one-on-one drills and his dominance was reflected this week when he was the No. 1 player in Tuesday's Hot 11.

"I don't think I've been beaten in one-on-one's yet," McCoy said. "I got caught up one time by Chris Stewart. I came through and I beat him and I shook him one way and he give me slap and I spun. But when I spun, I slipped and he got me locked up and I spun out of it. I really won it, but I'll give him credit because he did do good on that one."

McCoy is currently undecided on where he'll play next year, but he has narrowed things down to Oklahoma, LSU, USC and Notre Dame.

"I've dropped it from six to four," McCoy said. "Oklahoma, LSU, USC and Notre Dame are my final four. That will be my final four and I don't think I'll add anybody else. That will be my final four and I'll make a decision around signing day."

The team that appears to be in the drivers seat for McCoy is Oklahoma. McCoy said it will be hard to turn down the in-state power.

"To be honest yes," McCoy said when asked if it will be hard to turn OU down. "But it's all about the best school for me. God will set up all the stuff for me and he'll lead me to where I want to go. If OU is not the best place, it's not where I'll be."

However, both USC and LSU are making hard pushes towards McCoy with several of their commitments who are participating in the U.S. Army Game.

McCoy said the Trojan commits on his West team have constantly been getting in his ear about joining them at Southern Cal and his relationship with Woods makes the Tigers a viable option at this point.

McCoy and Woods have really hit it off in San Antonio and the two first became friends during their official visit at LSU.

"Me and Al Woods had a connection the minute we met," McCoy said. "When we met the connection we've had is like we've been playing with each other since little league. Since we've gotten so close, he wants me to go to LSU with him.

"The bond that we have will help out in the recruiting process. Al would probably be my roommate if I go to LSU."

there has been some rumors of McCoy having ND 4th. I spoke to my connection. He said that is not the case. we are still very much in on McCoy. He has one his guys at the AA practices and said that it is something that is being started by one of the recruiting sites.

Time will tell.

Yeah, I spoke with him today and he sees no changes there. When I stated on the prior post that it was something started by other sites, I was referring to the site that was running a rumor stating that McCoy has ND 4th on his list. Same person who said Young was going to Florida. Young eliminated Florida last week.

My connection said it still appears that McCoy is ND. He has seen nor heard anything changing. He sticks by his comments that McCoy did give his commit to Haywood on that Wednesday evening in Oklahoma. He will be meeting with one of the ND people in the loop this weekend so hopefully he will have further conviction. Cuz, my in has been 100% correct on everything that he has given me inside info on. I still believe he is correct on the McCoy info but I have to admit that I am not quite as confident on McCoy. Let's remember that these are high school kids. Things do change. Maybe it is just me being pessimistic. I don't know. McCoy is just such a huge need. I'm dying to see him in the blue and gold. He's a difference maker, what we need more than anything.

LET"S KEEP THE FAITH and see how it plays out. either way we should be extremely happy on NSD.

Bottom line: I'm told he is still looking ND.

I was also told that his father wants him to go to ND and his mother does NOT want him to go to USC. Oklahoma is probably our biggest competition on this. yeah, that's the local connection but I think other things mean more to him. He did say that God will make sure he goes to the proper place.

Broker, you are way too good at getting info, thanks for the update, i think he is ND, right now rumors fly, because if there is no news then no one reads the websites, this guy is going to be a good one and I think hes going to be Irish

thanks a ton on the info! Yeah, he is probably the most important target for ND this off season, besides the secondary. Now that the secondary is taken care of, McCoy is one of the last pieces to the puzzle--and probably the most important. I didn't think that Oklahoma had a shot at him until I heard Tom Lemming about 3 weeks ago say that he expected McCoy to go to Oklahoma. I was a little shocked to be honest, but as you said, these are high school kids, anything can happen. I should probably know more than anyone, seeing that I'm 18 and I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do in life until the very end of my senior year of HS. Thanks again.

It will be interesting to see if Broker comes back with conflicting information. There seems to be a lot of people denying the accuracy of the Scout.com article. Maybe just living in denial.

Either way, the Patriots didn't win with a lot of stars. We shouldn't get all worked up over a single recruit.

That Scout article has been questioned by many people. I have not decided whether I think it's real or not, but Oklahoma is the only Scout site that I know of that is reporting he's down to 3.

i hope that article is wrong!
when i click the link it says i have to register to read it, but the headline is OKC Five-star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy talks about play in the U.S. Army game and final three.
does it matter if it is Oklahoma.scout.com rather than NotreDame.scout.com??

the way McCoy was in the game today he looks like he would be a great player to play along side the other Irish defensive players.

ive been an Irish fan back to the days of Lou Holtz, but ive never been one to know how recruiting goes. it looks like this years Notre Dame recruiting class may be awesome!

You rang?

the article about McCoy leaving ND out of his top 3 is taken from an interview with McCoy. This sounds kinda fishy but true. The interviewer removed the microphone before McCoy said ND.

We are still VERY much in on McCoy. As you know, I have already said that McCoy has already committed to ND. I am very confident that this is still the case. I'm not 100% but darn close. these are 18 year old kids you can never be 100%.

One more thing, i participated in a chat with D. Jones last night. Jones said that McCoy was definitely Irish.

second one more thing. the group of ND commits at the AA game (10 commits) went out as a group last night. McCoy went with.

You be the judge.

P.S. This all stays on this site please.

That is encouraging news. I've followed ND football for 20 years, but never followed recruiting this closely. I can't believe the drama that is created during this process. The McCoy story reminds me of the "news" story about Weis dropping one of the two QB recruits.

Oklahoma City Star is reporting also that McCoy has dropped ND as a possible destination. It says McCoy will choose from LSU,Oklahoma, and Southern Cal. Even Lemming said that he believes ND is out of the running after interviewing McCoy. Who knows maybe it's posturing on McCoys part?

01-09-2006, 11:07 PM
I would say that this is posturing, if you read what broker has said, what the other recruits believe, and look at what other recruits have done (e.g. Jai Eugene who picked michigan after he had lead lemming and others to believe michigan was out of it)...what bigger way to make a splash than to out of nowhere decide to go to ND. I get the feeling McCoy and possibly even ND/Weis wants to be the story on signing day, as good as he was at the AA game he didnt get nearly as much spotlight as he deserved, and doing something like this will afford him the opportunity to be the headline along with ND come Feb 2.

I think he is Irish, I think he will announce Irish, and I think Young will follow too...but just for arguments sake, if we lose out on McCoy, we get Kates, I know you people think Mustain is next, but DT is still open (excluding what you think about Mullen, and Kates will fill the role, hes a big atheltic kid who seems bored playing in high school, I really think Kates has a ton of upside once college coaches start getting the most out of him, as much as it would hurt to lose out on McCoy, Kates would surely mitigate the damages to some extent...mind you this is all speculation, I truely believe McCoy is playing the media for a fool and increasing his headline font come signing day...Our staff knows what is going on and I trust in Charlie to finish this class out the right way, which means McCoy and Young

On a side note, can I just say that I want to take back an earlier post in the general discussion where I said McNeil nor Walls would start, what I saw from McNeil this week makes me think he will compete to start at some point this season, and I know Walls is getting overlooked because of his injury and him not playing but he is as good if not better than McNeil, we got two shutdown corners, and just like justin king at PSU these two kids may make noise as freshman corners

Olsen could play DT as well, infact some people think that he woulld be a better fit there.

SirJohn
01-09-2006, 11:21 PM
Nice analysis jkmo.I hope McCoy is posturing for media. The reference to Mustain.. well he is postering media and using the big ND name. We still need big guys. No more QB's at this time. My gut feeling and I had same on Fasano going pro when others said no.

But it's nice to have such little room left and so many guys wanting to catch the ND Bus. :)

01-10-2006, 12:36 AM
Good point about Olsen, my only worry is we have no depth on O or D, this class all but eliminates that problem with regards to O-line, im not saying we dont need to keep building depth, but Weis, and this is assuming we get Young, got 100% of what he wanted on the O-line. Now with regards to the d-line, we have a depth problem their also, specifically at DT and while yes mullen and Olsen could become good DT's, neither of them are ready to step in and play day one, McCoy would do that, Kates in my opinon would have a better shot then Olsen and Mullen but is not nearly as ready as McCoy, he would make the perfect third man behind landri and laws. If McCoy is Irish then Weis in my opinon again gets 100% of what he wanted at d-line, making this class perfect.

SirJohn
01-10-2006, 12:49 AM
8) We need the D guys I already lit into too many ND "FANS" fire Minter. He had junk to work with 9-3 you better be more than happy for after 6-6.It's a question if newcomers step up and the holdovers improve. There is a falling off other spots in 2007. If 9-3 is what media would have said we needed (They need three years of rebuilding) I like it this first year. No problems from this fan.

RE: McCoy. If broker is correct in that he went out with the ND group that sews it up. The mikcrophone bit I don't know about.

Lemming? Discount anything he says. He was miffed sometime in the Davie years when ND Administration started closing off access to these paid guys. He's more miffed now that Charlie is doing a Bilichik no meadia and announced no inside information. That "inside info pays Lemmings bills." Known as an ND shill he overated ND players in the past and sort of demotes them at will now.

Personally given the numerous coaches calling which are the important guys. Then nobodies like Rivals, Scout.com and Lemming hounding me...If I were a kid I'd feed them all bull on my cell phone and hang up.

So in or out only Charlie knows for sure. :)

From Rivals yesterday:

Kates has only taken one official to date to Minnesota although a quiet official to Syracuse has also been suspected. No other officials are currently scheduled for the Rivals250 lineman and his longtime favorite, Notre Dame, has apparently pulled his offer.

If we are pulling Kates offer and telling Lewis that there was no more room in this class then McCoy is in, I don't think there is anyway Weis would be eliminating contingencies if there was a chance he would need them

Grason
01-13-2006, 05:10 PM

I think Kates is completely off the ND radar. Not to be mean but I really question Kates' mental toughness. He seems lost. He has never had a father figure in his life and it is very obvious.
