Fort Lauderdale · On the field, St. Thomas Aquinas lineman Dan Wenger is one of the toughest offensive linemen in the state, if not the nation.

But when it came to making a decision that would affect the rest of his life, Wenger said he was "humbled" by the chance to play college football at Notre Dame.

It proved to be an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Wenger visited South Bend in early November, and after some thought, orally committed to the Irish and head coach Charlie Weis.

"I think [Notre Dame] is unmatched to any other place," Wenger said. "It's the best fit all around between academics and athletics. You obviously have the football tradition and what they've done in the past, but wherever you go, you're meeting someone that was a graduate of Notre Dame. Everyone knows about Notre Dame. It's not something people are blind to."

Wenger, a 6-4, 285-pound center, is one of a trio of heavily recruited Raider linemen along with Sam Young and Marcus Gilbert. All three have received numerous scholarship offers, with Wenger also considering Florida, Duke, Louisiana State, Oklahoma, Purdue and Pittsburgh.

With Wenger, Young and Gilbert, the Raiders' offense has averaged 337.7 yards and 41.3 points per game.

A selection to the U.S. Army All-America Bowl along with Young, Wenger is the first St. Thomas football player headed to Notre Dame since receiver Bobby Brown signed with the Irish in 1995.

"It's definitely an honor to be one of a few or one in a long time to be going there," Wenger said. "When you're younger, you talk about how you can see yourself going to Notre Dame or Penn State or wherever, but all of a sudden, the big picture comes in and reality sets in. ... I'm actually going to Notre Dame and it's very overwhelming. It shows how my hard work paid off through my four years of high school."

Wenger will have the opportunity to formalize his commitment in February on National Signing Day. Until then, oral commitments are non-binding.

this class of linemen for this class is already awesome. Imagine if we land Young to add to this line. Young could very well be our starting RT next year.
