Now that Johnson has committed to Kenturkey, Kates is presumably the front runner. I know a lot of people are high on Kates (6'3 320lbs). He would be the prototypical nose tackle taking on two offensive linemen. However, he doesn't necessarily seem to fit into the scheme (how many 300lbs plus d-linemen have we had in recent years?).

Scout also seems to allude to the fact he may have some issues with effort and what not. So much so that under "areas to improve" they list "intensity and effort." Meanwhile McCoy's considered one of the best leaders and hardest workers in this recruiting class and is more similar to Laws and Landri. A guy who can play either NT or DT.

Anybody have any additional info on either of these two guys.

Speaking of Laws and Landri, these two have been somewhat disappointing this year. Checking their numbers they've combined for a total of 4.5 sacks and 69 tackles. Both these guys were highly regarded coming in and are probably coming back next year, but I'm still worried about our defense if our interior two can't generate a significant amount of pressure. Additionally, Hoyte and Mays are moving on. Crum is the only returning member of the unit. Hold me, I'm Irish.

:D McCoy looks great what I can find is 5 stars Rivals. 6' $" 280 DL DT OL
85 tackles, 20 sacks 3 FF 3 IRS i interception returned 48 yards for a TD. Intensity and effort :D :D A nice Christmas present. :D

Kates? 2 star OL DT 320 says wants to drop 15 pounds Intensity and effort would bother me.

GPA is 2.7. That could be a problem. I believe within that area range 2.5 2.7 Athletic office has to take the papers to admissions to ask if they think the kid can make it in college with help. Weis commented some times they say yes sometimes no. So it would be more of an admissions decision the Weis or Kates. Basiclly if lethergic on field and classromm I'd guess thumbs down. ?? guess there.

From LSU BEAT.com McCoy scheduled to visit 'this weekend' ?

Gerald McCoy, DT, 6-4, 285, Oklahoma City (Okla.) Southeast

McCoy is Rivals.com's No. 1-rated defensive tackle in the country. Scout.com has him as its No. 2-rated defensive tackle. McCoy has already visited Notre Dame, USC, Virginia Tech with another trip to Miami scheduled next weekend. He also is considering Oklahoma where he attended camp over the summer.

If Charlie brings in Kates it is a huge mistake in my mind.We dont need kids like that! One day he is commited next day he isnt. I havent cared much for him at all. Doesnt sound to me anyway like a Charlie Weis guy! No intensity or motivation equals not a good football player size or no size.
Kates told alot of people he had commited to Notre Dame but went against that and tried to cover it up with some lame excuse. No thanks buddy keep on walkin. Gimme McCoy any day of the week!!

I think the only way that we land a DT is if another player goes the route of early enrollment, unless you want to give sam youngs scholarship slot to a DT

:) IrishLeopard. Great to see you post and jump in. More often now. Seems like your right the need isn't there.

I may be wrong and somebody correct me...cause I have nothing at hand here at the moment. But as I recall a couple of the big guys played OL and DL. One the Florida guy?? was Tackle puls Center material. Confusing that more is one was something about could play Tackle and gurard.

The Center part got my attention because they make the whole thing go with the QB. Some can just short snap vs long. We need no more bobbled punts or kickoffs. They spell losing the momentum.

Duhhhhhhhhhh Me. Weis is that plug and play and having guys with multiple skills. I believe the Kates issue boils dowwn to intensity and effort. Sort of if you haven't shown it before you can't go promising it this late in your HS career.

It's not that i dont think DT is a concern, however, Young is more of a sure bet than McCoy or Lewis so why would we want to tell young that we are saving the scholarship for a DT who we arent even sure will commit?

In the best case scenario, west will go early enrollment and we will be able to land both young and mccoy/lewis

Yes can't say it would be up to the admissions people and not coach Weis.

To quote from the Rudy movie. "Those admissions people are a squirrely bunch."
